Dedicated staff make this rehab center thrive
posted 8 years ago
I found this wildlife rehab center, hidden from prominence, on State Road 50. I was amazed to see the variety of animals being cared for in a relatively small space. It is a wonderful place to visit and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly.
I became more involved with the refuge when I found a possum that had been hit in the head by a car, left bleeding and stunned in the road, in the middle of the night in my neighborhood. I coaxed the dazed possum into a kennel I keep in my car and prayed she would make it through the night.
The next morning I drove her to Back to Nature where she was immediately attended to. I named my little possum, "Braveheart" as she had so tenaciously clung to life until I could get her help. Back to Nature nurse her back to health and kept her until her death. The blow to her head had damaged her eyesight, so it was not possible to release her. I would visit her on occasion, usually to find her puttering around her enclosure, trying to make friends with the hog, or just taking an afternoon siesta. I knew she was happy.
For years, Back to Nature has been looking for a new home, and at last they have one! They will be moving in the near future to a new 20 acre center, where they will be better able to rehabilitate and care for the animals they love and expand their community education services.
Back to Nature is a valued part of East Orlando. They give injured wildlife a chance, and if they can't be released, they give them a home.
Pros: Wonderful staff and volunteers, animals are well cared for
Cons: Small cages-need more space
