Avian Vet in Bloomington (Great for Dogs too)

Nearly all of our experiences with this vet have been really positive. We bring our three birds to Dr Koch and our newly adopted dog just had her first visit to Dr Frye. Both vets are caring with our animals and spend the time to talk with us and answer all of our questions.

We had a disagreement with Dr Koch in one case - our parrot had ingested avacado. He looked this up in his database and found no problems - contrary to information we found online, in books, and by calling the ASPCA poison control hotline. Although we went to the office twice he did not see us and we ended up administering activated charcoal (as per advice by the ASPCA poison control hotline) ourselves. We were able to do this but made a big mess (which I am sure the vet wouldn't have done) and the treatment was delayed by our two useless trips to the vet's office. Because we never did see him in person this may have been a miscommunication issue, but because this was potentially lethal we were upset.

However, all other interactions with Dr Koch have been great. As well as medical advice he has given us advice on training, diet, toy-making, choosing and introducing new birds, etc. I guess the lesson is, choose a good vet but also become as informed as you can on the most up to date information yourself.
