Very Caring and Compassionate

posted 5 years ago

Our Buddy was referred to a specialist so we took him in with X-rays in hand - his first thoughts were much like the other vet - Lung Cancer and a large tumor on his spleen. At first the prognosis was very bleak. Seeing my husband's and my distress he started talking about options but again he warned his condition didn't look good. Buddy had much fluid in his lungs. He said he could drain the fluid to help him breathe - he ended up removing almost 2 1/2 liters which was bloody which also didn't bode well but he stated he would test it for cancer. He called us at 6:30pm that night and was surprised when there was no cancer so he had us bring Buddy back to biopsy the tumor - again he called at 6:30pm the same day and said the tumor was benign - so now we could start talking surgical options but he wanted to test Buddy's blood to make sure it would coagulate properly so again we took him down the next day and the test went well so he referred us to a surgeon who performed the operation that very day. Buddy came through the surgery with flying colors - did very well the whole first day - Dr. Franklin called 6:30pm that evening to ask how Buddy was doing - he hadn't heard anything and we let him know that Buddy was doing well, the evening of the 2nd day Buddy took a turn for the worst and died - not exactly sure why bloodclot? We really don't know - didn't have an autopsy performed. We didn't contact any vets after that. On Saturday we received a bouquet of flowers from Dr. Franklin and his staff in sympathy for our loss. That was such a kind thing to do. I appreciated the thought. He is very conservative and realizes the financial hardship on the owners. So he doesn't just jump in and take a bunch of test all at once. It would have been nice if we didn't have to travel back and forth everyday since we didn't live in the same city - the travel is about 45 min - 1 hour each way and it would have been nice to have all the tests done on the same day; although in his defense he didn't realize how far we had traveled to bring Buddy to him. I would definitely use Dr. Franklin again if needed, but next time I'll make sure that all tests are done if possible on the same day : )

Pros: Caring and Compassionate - Conservative

Cons: maybe takes more steps causing a little more financial outlay

Brilliant internal medicine vet

posted 6 years ago

I have to first admit my experience with Dr. Franklin was a while back when he worked in Raleigh Hills Veterinary Hospital. I made an appointment to bring my older dog who was ill and my vet recommended a specialist. First off, he walked in and went right into the exam without much of a "Hello." As he examined my dog he looked in disgust, said "tsk, tsk" and just let her head drop! He implied I had not done the proper tests and care for her condition. Funny thing is I just spent several thousand dollars on her care with tests, treatment amd medicine. He even had copies of the x-rays, bloodwork, and all her medical records on his table! It was obvious she was my baby and he recommended a few additional tests and said he'd call.

When I finally called him back for results he said, "well its amoloidosis as I suspected and she won't make it." We can try some prednisone (whch I already had her on!!). I tried to ask more questions but he said "I've got another call and a patient waiting." The man just told me my dog was gong to die and rushed me off the phone!! The only thing he did give me was the correct diagnosis when no one else did. I had to euthanize my beloved dog of thirteen three weeks later--I took her to my original vet who was compassionate.

Yes, he's a brilliant doctor, no he is not a compassionate man and was rude to me and my dog. Hopefully he has changed over the years now that he has his own practice.

Pros: Dr. Franklin was brilliant

Cons: Rude and not compassionate at all!
