Gulf Coast Veterinary Oncology

My ten year old blond lab had cancer, for the second time, but this one was different. This time she had a human-form of bone cancer in one leg. She beat the first cancer. We moved to Houston leaving a world-class University animal oncology program and were nervous about what we would find at GCVS. One and a half years later, after forming many friendships and observing how the entire oncology staff adored our brave girl, she passed away. On her one-year survivor anniversary they gave her a bandanna signed by all of the staff and she wouldn't let me remove it--she wore it three days. She received monthly treatments and somehow she always enjoyed her treatment day. The cost was nearly prohibitive (but we could afford it for her) and her doctor helped me identify cost-cutting measures so we could maximize her core treatments. They made our blond girl feel as special as she was. On her last day they made it possible for us to spend as much time as necessary in a private room. Three months later I can barely write about the experience but if we had to go through this again I would not hesitate to return. The GCVS Oncology program has a terrific team and I thank them for everything.
