The place to go for complicated cases and emergency care

posted 5 years ago

When I lived in Columbia, I used the UMC Veterinary Teaching Hospital for emergency care for my dog and was satisfied with the care. I also took my dog there for orthopedic surgery, which was successful.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to volunteer in the animal ICU there and saw first hand what the facility looked like and what care animals received.

The hospital is a very nice facility and well equipped to manage large as well as small animals.

I know one of the leading vet techs there and her knowledge base is superb. I would trust my pets to her care any day.

Pros: Teaching hospital

Cons: Teaching hospital

Susan's Spinal Cord Injury

posted 5 years ago

Susan raced out the back door in February 2008 and slipped on the icy patio twisting her back badly. Several discs in her backbone were badly damage which badly damaged her spinal cord. This happened at 5:00 am on Saturday. I called the Hospitals emergency number and made arrangements for Susan to come in. We had Susan in the emergency room within 15 minutes. On call staff immediately examined Susan and determined that she was badly hurt and needed surgery right away. We were told to go home and they would call us with progress reports and her status. We were kept up to date on Susan's surgery and her status by both the surgeon and students. We could visit Susan the next day, Sunday.

Susan was clean and very happy to see us. The hospital was doing a great job of managing her pain which was extensive. We were able to visit her daily (sometimes twice a day) and she was making good progress. They had put Susan in a 4-wheel wheel chair and she love being able to run down the halls on her own. However, it was determined that Susan need more surgery to remove more bone on a different disc. The second surgery went well and again we were kept up to date on her status. When we visited Susan the next day she was way more relaxed and seemed to have way less pain which again was well managed. She started healing very well and was able to go home in a week.

Her intensive care kennel was spacious and very clean and neat. There was always students assigned to her to ensure that she was kept clean and had someone to comfort her.

The hospital was very accommodating for our visits and tried to provide a nice quite space for us to be with Susan. The instructed us on how to empty her bladder and care for Susan (for the first two months she was not able to move around or do anything that might affect her backbone until the bone grew back).

Susan is paralyzed with no control over her back legs or bladder. She has adapted to her situation very well and is still her happy-loving self. All of the staff at the Hospital were nice, friendly and helpful to us and Susan.

A top notch place for pet emergencies and care!

Pros: Susan is able to have a happy life.

Cons: Sometimes have to wait for appointment.

I love this team of vets and their services. They are definitly the prefered clinic for my horse. Unfortunatly, I've moved my horse too far east to make it practical for them to be an emergency vet.
