The Best Vet Clinic on the Planet

posted 7 years ago

I get emotional when I think about how much Dr. Mary Alice Cox has done for me and my animals. She has been our vet since 1997, and she always makes me feel like my animal companions are her favorites. Of course, I know she makes everyone feel that way, but that is why she is so great. She and her husband Dr. Jim Koch, along with the other vets in their practice, are incredibly knowledgable and compassionate, and they go far beyond the call of duty in caring for the animals in this community. Their work with Feral Cat Friends is just amazing. Mary Alice works late into the night spaying and neutering feral cats pro bono, and she has been a tireless advocate for the cause. She is also near and dear to my heart because of her support of the pit bull-type breeds, and she herself rescued a cute little pit bull stray and named her Pinky. In my work fostering pit bulls, I don't know what I would have done without her support and superlative veterinary care. She and Jim are true friends of animals and I feel lucky to know them. I also think extremely highly of their staff members, who are unfailingly friendly and knowledgable. Standouts are Daniel and Heather, among many others. Mary Alice has helped me and my animals through some very tough times, including the illness of my beloved and dearly departed beagle Foghat. I can't say enough about how great this practice is, and I am forever grateful to them.

Pros: Vets who truly care

Cons: None!

Avian Vet in Bloomington (Great for Dogs too)

posted 7 years ago

Nearly all of our experiences with this vet have been really positive. We bring our three birds to Dr Koch and our newly adopted dog just had her first visit to Dr Frye. Both vets are caring with our animals and spend the time to talk with us and answer all of our questions.

We had a disagreement with Dr Koch in one case - our parrot had ingested avacado. He looked this up in his database and found no problems - contrary to information we found online, in books, and by calling the ASPCA poison control hotline. Although we went to the office twice he did not see us and we ended up administering activated charcoal (as per advice by the ASPCA poison control hotline) ourselves. We were able to do this but made a big mess (which I am sure the vet wouldn't have done) and the treatment was delayed by our two useless trips to the vet's office. Because we never did see him in person this may have been a miscommunication issue, but because this was potentially lethal we were upset.

However, all other interactions with Dr Koch have been great. As well as medical advice he has given us advice on training, diet, toy-making, choosing and introducing new birds, etc. I guess the lesson is, choose a good vet but also become as informed as you can on the most up to date information yourself.

Pros: Friendly staff, only option for birds in B'ton

Cons: see my review

Great Dr. but....

posted 7 years ago

Had a dog who needed a very expensive treatment, the vet was super nice, but when it came to setting up payment, they weren't very helpful, they wanted money NOW. I understand they needed to be paid, but after such an expensive didn't have all the money up front

Pros: Have great vets

Cons: weren't helpful with payment

Dr. Koch is wonderful!

posted 6 years ago

We've taken our dog here for 4 years. Dr. Koch is wonderful with her (even though she is not the most personable dog at the vet). He always has helpful tips and takes plenty of time to answer any questions we have. Usually they will keep the dog for the day so you don't have to wait for the appointment time but it is possible to have an in-person visit as well. They saved us quite a bit of money by not giving our dog a "recommended" blood test prior to dental work because she is young and healthy and didn't need it. We appreciated their honesty. My only complaint is that our dog is quite anxious and it can take a while to check out and pay which is miserable on the dog.

I give Dr. Koch a 5 out of 5!

Pros: Kind and knowledgeable staff, easy drop off pet appointments

Cons: Sometimes it can be difficult to schedule an appointment without the "Drop off" option
