Dogs & Cats Available for Adoption at this Location & Fargo Petsmart

posted 5 years ago

I have had a very different experience with the staff of Lucky Dog Boarding & Training than other posters, but I adopted a cat from them rather than a dog. I have not visited their facility in Detroit Lakes, MN, but interacted with them when they were at the Fargo Petsmart and were displaying dogs and cats available for adoption.

This kennel has an adoption program for dogs and cats that are either surrendered by their owners or come from one of the five area pounds of Detroit Lakes, Frazee, Audubon, Lake Park and Callaway. This organization is called The Marshmallow Foundation, and is a "low-kill" facility, and animals do receive vaccinations and medical care. Their animals available for adoption are listed under the websites:
(Put in a Detroit Lakes or even a Fargo zip code)

(Look to the left on the upper tool bar menu to find either Marshmallow Foundation or click on "adoptable animals".)

The Marshmallow Foundation is supported soley by donations and fundraising. They have an adoption contract and a spay/neuter voucher system so that a portion of the adoption fees can be returned to you once you provide proof that the animal was spayed or neutered. I opted to have this $20 stay with The Marshmallow Foundation, and initialled my consent to this on the adoption contract.

I adopted little Miss Marigold from a Fargo Petsmart Adoption Day event with The Marshmallow Foundation. Marigold was originally named "Ellie's Angel" since a little girl named Ellie found this kitten wandering the streets of Detroit Lakes last summer. Marigold is almost an Internet star thanks to as she is in the majority of my videos. Marigold had been screened for feline leukemia, had been wormed twice, had her two feline distemper shots, had her rabies vaccination, and only needed to be spayed. Her medical records were given to me when I adopted her.

During the adoption process, I was dealt with in a professional manner and had the terms of the adoption contract explained to me. I have absolutely no complaints about the adoption process or my interaction with The Marshmallow Foundation representatives.

Half of the cat kennels at the Fargo Petsmart are reserved for cats from The Marshmallow Foundation, and half are for the Humane Society of the Lakes, both based in Detroit Lakes, MN.

I do plan on visiting their site in Detroit Lakes, once winter is over with.

Pros: Take in pound animals & place for adoption from a 5 city area around Detroit Lakes

Cons: Non-profit shelter overwhelmed with dogs and cats because of those who don't spay or neuter their pets.

Poor animal care

posted 6 years ago

I went with a friend to adopt a dog from them, and I found out that the shelter did absolutely nothing in regards to test the animals health or even giving shots. The dog received no rabies, distemper, parvo, or was even tested for heartworm. For the amount of money that people fork over for adopting an animal the least they could do is the basics.

Pros: Cute animals

Cons: Poor animal care
