Petland- Iowa City

I've been in this store a couple of times, just killing time, and I leave very sad. These animals (mostly dogs & cats) have their lives in the hands of people who believe hundreds of dollars are the going price for love. I agree, shelters are the way to go.

Pros: The store was very clean and organized, and you can hold and play with any of the animals.

Cons: The small cages the dogs sit in all day, makes me sad.

The main reason I don't recommend Petland to anyone is because they sell dogs and cats that aren't always in good health, plus, I have to assume that these animals come from puppy mills since no good breeder would just let their puppies/kittens go without knowing who the owners will be. The purebred breeder I got my dog from had good adoptive families waiting before she even bred her dog. She cared about where her dogs went and wanted to be there for the adoptive families for any advice they needed after adopting. It seems that Petland is more concerned out making money than what happens to the pets after they are sold. The staff is friendly and helpful but I could not work there. The puppies need more socialization than they get stuck in those showcases day after day. A friend on mine bought a puppy there and it was sick and required a lot of vet care. I am all for breeders who breed because they admire the specific traits their breed has, know which dogs are breed quality, give their pets the best of care, and do it because they love what they do and care about thier pets. Petland needs to quit promoting puppy mills if they want my business.
