My last visit to Petland

posted 6 years ago

I stopped one night to get some hermit crab food, I forgot to get it when I was out earlier and Petland is very close.
I saw puppies and kittens in "tanks", glass fronted cages with little ventalation, so little in fact that the glass shows moisture from the humidity trapped inside from the animals body heat and breathing.
Some had no water, several had a lot of urine in the bottom of their cages, some had feces squished through the grids in their tanks and some were too large to fit comfortably in their tanks. By too large I mean they couldn't stand up without crouching to avoid hitting the top or not able to walk inside their tank.
I was with my parents; while I was looking for the food they were looking at the animals. One of the workers brought out a small yellow lab puppy that she saw my dad watching. The puppy was lethargic and very thin. The worker kept telling my dad how sweet the puppy was and how she was sure he would make a great dog for my dad. She had no idea who he was or what kind of person he was. At the time my dad walked with a cane, was on kidney dialysis 3 times a week and going in for a transplant soon, the last thing he needed was a new puppy!
My dad told her she would have to talk me into it first. As soon as I came around the corner she was shoving this puppy at me and kept telling me how cute he was. I asked if his parents had been X-rayed and certified,(hips and elbows) she didn't know. I asked what breeder he came from, she couldn't tell me. I asked how long they had dealt with this breeder and at what kind of success rate, she didn't know. I can't remember what kind of price tag was on him, but I do remember laughing out loud. My questions were not ridiculous, if someone is going to spend a load of money on a puppy (or anything) they should be able to have their questions answered.
I have no problem with people wanting and purchasing pure bred animals, but I do have a problem with people that sell animals for ridiculous amounts of money and not knowing what kind of animal they're buying or selling. I also have a problem with people that breed animals to make money and not to better the breed.
I should also mention that while the staff was trying to make a "long shot" sale with my dad, there was no one asking me if I needed any help finding the item that I definately needed to purchase. I guess my realistic $5 purchase didn't compare to purchase they were wishing for.
I will never purchase anything at this establishment again. To do so helps to keep them in business and allows them to continue, what I consider, shady practices.

Pros: Good Location

Cons: Parking stinks

I have gerbils and a hamster. They absolute love the Oatie Oat treats and the Banana Bones treats. They are perfect for your little furkids.

Clean & caring. They care about the animals and are willing to work with you if you are trying to find a husky for adoption.
