Petco’s central New York location gives new meaning to “superstore.”

June 29, 2010 2:39 pm | By Zootoo Editor Flinn D.

With over ten thousand items in stock, Petco is truly the largest pet store you will ever set foot in. It may, in fact, be one of the largest stores you ever set foot in. About two-thirds of the store is dedicated to cat and dog products with the other third devoted to everything else – from gerbils to live lobsters and everything in between.

The selection of chew toys alone is ten times the selection available at your neighborhood pet store, and the section devoted to crates and “pet housing” is one of the largest and most impressive I’ve ever seen. You can buy your cat a litter that cleans itself (not enough room to explain in this review), or you can buy your dog a crate the size of an apartment.

Petco also offers such hard-to-find items as fencing to pet-proof your yard, useful summer accessories such as pet boat ramps and life preservers, and a wide selection of beds and carriers – ranging from the practical to the ridiculous. In the pet food department, Petco presents - literally - a kilometer of options. Of course, you'll find household names like Science Diet and Purina. But in recent years, Petco has also made an effort to carry more of the harder-to-find organic brands, such as Castor and Pollux and Natural Balance. However, if you’re looking for that homemade organic dog treat with free-range chicken and alfalfa sprouts you just heard about, you’re probably still out-of-luck.

The mammoth-sized store is surprisingly clean, although I did notice lingering smells that changed as I walked from department to department. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and very eager to assist shoppers: you won’t take more than ten steps inside the store before someone asks you if you need help. Petco also has an extensive selection of pet medications and vitamins and expert guidance to help you decide which one is right for your pet. Petco stores also offer a wide array of pet services such as vaccinations, pet grooming, training and even pet photography.

Bottom line: if they don’t have it, you don’t need it. But know what you’re getting yourself into before you visit – your charming neighborhood boutique this is not.

Pros: If you can’t find it here, you probably don’t need it. Services such as grooming, training, and pet photography add to the convenience. Friendly staff provides helpful guidance about a wide variety of products.

Cons: Extremely hard-to-find items may be missing from their stock. Lingering odors persist despite a clean interior.
