Supporting Shelter: Dubuque Regional Humane Society

Supporting Rescue: The Critter Corral Guinea Pig Rescue

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to make

Cons: hard to make a cage cover

Coroplast offers unlimited cage options for small pets. I'm amazed at the designs I've people come up with using coroplast. Easy to find it at sign stores and grid are readily found, as well. The only problem I've seen with them is that they aren't as sturdy as a heavier plastic cage. Could be an issue if you have predatory animals in addition to the prey animals in the coroplast cage. Still, as good alternative to a store bought cage.

if you use zip ties all around it, it makes the cage very strong

That's fun, making it with your daughter..... My cages are all prefab cages, mainly because they are in my dining room and I stack two of them to keep room to walk. I got one free and two were bought used from the animal shelter near us. If I had an extra room, I'd definitely go the coroplast route. Lots of options and more space for the furred ones. :-)

I have often spent many many hours looking at peoples cages and designs, and they are really awesome.I think the trick is many ties to keep it strong and sturdy.
Kath, did you ever see the 2 story piggie Corral?I thought it the coolest, but you really do need a full room for that one.:)
Thanks for your input!

Oops, Sharon, I replied Lorraine's message to your's. As far as designs, the best I had ever seen were those made by a woman who volunteers with our rescue. She built huge wooden framed coroplast cages that had what looked like roofs on them. She angled studs like you see under a roof and attached grids that would allow her to open and close sections of the grid roof. It kept her cats out. The cages were on wheels and were about 7' long. She designed them to look like different style homes. She used her family room for all of her guinea pigs and they looked really nice in there.
