Butte Humane is the story of a shelter with a big heart!
We care for more than 5,500 dogs and cats each year. With the bad economy putting a huge strain on all of us, it is clear that our facility is holding us back, greatly limiting our ability to reach out and do more. Our too-small and dilapidated facility is 60 years old. Our roof leaks. Our ventilation and drainage systems are outdated and in some areas nonexistent, leading to many health issues for the animals. Most of our dog runs are outside-only, and all of our adoptable cats (which may top 300 in the summer) must be housed in two small colony rooms.
Our goal is to find every homeless animal a loving and safe place to live – and we need your help to make that happen!
With our community rallying around us, we’re working hard to raise money to fix and grow our shelter – but the Zootoo.com competition could provide us with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make changes that will help us help animals now and for generations to come.
We want to build an eco-friendly shelter that is a gathering place for the whole community – a place where people and animals can come together.
If we win, we will have the capacity to broaden our reach and rescue more animals throughout California and in our own area.
With our hearts on our sleeves, we ask for your vote to win this contest. Please vote for Butte Humane Society!

Butte Humane Society began its work in 1911 and is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Our mission is to provide and advocate humane treatment of companion and other animals through promotion of compassion, responsible stewardship and public awareness in our community and the world we share.
Butte Humane Society is a low-kill shelter which cares for more than 200 animals daily. In the summer, this number almost doubles, taking in an average of 600 animals a month. We are the Open Admissions Shelter for the City of Chico, we accept surrendered animals from the area, and when possible we also rescue animals slated for euthanasia at other shelters. Though this puts a major strain on our limited space and resources, our staff, volunteers and supporters would agree that our rescue-oriented mindset sets us apart from other shelters. Our lives revolve around each and every animal in our care, and we ensure that adopters feel the same way!
Anyone who's visited our shelter can plainly see our desperate need for a new facility. The original half of the shelter was built many decades ago - so long ago that the original records were lost and the only date we have for it is 1952 which is when the City of Chico began keeping records of such facilities - with another 3800 SF addition being completed in 1987. Staff are constantly fighting a battle against decades of wear & tear coupled with outdated and inadequate drainage and ventilation. We only have two small rooms to house our available cats, whose daily population may range upwards of 100 in the summertime. And more than half of our dogs live in outdoor kennels (with a dogloo for each!) Managerial staff now work in an on-site office trailer, and administrative staff work at a separate office nearby.
