Pros: Staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Volunteers are too!

Cons: Not enough room to house them all

I have been an employee of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona for over 13 years now. While it may not seem sincere to read a review written by such a biased person, I feel that I must write one anyway. I would not still be working here if it weren't for the people. We have a great staff and supportive volunteer corp. Working in a shelter can take its toll on anyone physically, but we take an emotional beating on a regular basis. It's just impossible to work with all these great animals with their sad, and often adorable faces, without getting attached. If any staff member is having a particularly bad day it's not long lived because there is often a smiling volunteer or staff member around the corner to cheer them up. If one can't be found, there are a number of offices with foster animals who need to be socialized, rehabbed, or just loved. The sound of a kitten purring or seeing a tail wagging back and forth usually does the trick. Happy and well adjusted staff and volunteers usually means happy and well adjusted future pets. I believe that all of our staff and volunteers do an amazing job of balancing the demands of good customer service and the emotional roller coaster ride that comes with caring for shelter animals.
