The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSAZ) has a niche for you. You can work or volunteer there or simply use their services as a member of the community. I initially attended Sunday Fundays with my dog. From 8-10AM on Sunday mornings, their Companions for Life Center would invite people from the community to bring their dogs to play in the off-leash, grassy yards and air-conditioned warehouse. This was an absolute delight in the summer months of southern Arizona, where the heat is brutal and grass is limited. All spayed/neutered, well-mannered dogs could join in the fun with a $5 donation to HSSAZ. I then started attending the Yappy Hour events such as Howl-a-ween. These events were play days for your dogs, with biscuits and treats for both human and pet, costume contests, pet photography, etc. After experiencing these, I signed up for the volunteer orientation and dog handling, volunteer classes. They have it for cats too. I have had opportunities to walk the adoption dogs, and participate in the dog obedience and agility training classes. There are special community events like Doggie Boogie and Puttin on the Ritz where volunteers with various skills and abilities are needed to help out. I've really enjoyed working with the staff at the center and helping the public learn to enjoy their time with their dogs. The HSSAZ is a fantastic facility.
