Review Details

Table Mountain Animal Center in Golden, Colorado, has come a long and wonderful way in the past couple of years.
The people who work at the shelter look at things from the animals' point of view. They have initiated some wonderful programs such as their in-house dog training program (P.H.A.T. - check it out on their website); they also send dogs to "school" at a local Petsmart in order to increase dogs' chances of being adopted; they have a network of foster families and have fostered everything from reptiles to gerbils!
The good people at TMAC work closely with several dog rescue organizations to release to rescues those dogs that are deemed unadoptable, either due to medical or behavioral issues.
They also send to rescue those dogs that just aren't doing well at the shelter because the dogs are overwhelmed or depressed. I imagine they have a similar program for cats, but since I'm allergic to cats, I don't work with them at all.
I have often seen the Center Manager at work at her computer, with a dog in her lap; a couple dogs in beds on the floor; fish happily swimming in a tank on her bookcase; and a cat snoozing on her desk. I also often see other shelter workers snuggling animals, as they work.
TMAC is very often judged by its building, rather than by the dedication, knowledge and compassion of the people who work at the shelter.
If you are in the Denver area and are looking for a dog, cat, reptile, bird, gerbil or other small pet, please don't overlook Table Mountain Animal Center.
The building that houses the shelter is certainly long past its prime (which is why it's in the shelter makeover contest!) What the building lacks, however, is more than made up for by the warmth and compassion of the TMAC staff, not only toward animals, but also toward people.
