Supporting Shelter: Humane Society of Cherokee County

Pros: Great Staff

Cons: Needs more resources

A wonderful group of volunteers runs the Cherokee County Humane Society. They desperately need more resources! Cherokee County is overrun by cats and dogs due to lack of laws and the ignorance of people. Many people here do not act responsibly or kindly toward their pets. They do not spay and neuter their pets and then they dump the kittens and puppies on country roads. They do not seek medical care or practice preventive care for their pets. I live on a country road where these poor creatures are tossed out like a bag of garbage. I cannot take them to the shelter because the shelter is always full. This is not the fault of the volunteers! Many of the volunteers also house abandoned pets in their own homes. I now have eleven cats, five dogs, and two donkeys. When I moved to Cherokee County, I only had two dogs! The only animals I actually acquired out of desire were the donkeys. Don’t get me wrong I love all my animals and provide good care for them but this was not my plan. I am trying to find homes for some of my furry friends but it is very difficult to find a good home for them here. As I write this a tiny puppy that was dumped only a couple of days ago is whining so I just stopped to put him in my lap. He is precious and just like all cats and dogs, he just wants to be loved and taken care of. I am amazed at peoples cruelty. Please help the Cherokee County Humane Society with the makeover, they desperately need and deserve it!

Well put. This county really needs new laws and enforcement of those laws.

Here's the bad news about Oklahoma-- Counties cannot pass their own laws about animals and must depend on the State of Oklahoma to make a blanket law applying all across the state. Its the way Oklahoma limited its County governments in the state's structure. (There are exceptions for counties that have a huge population-- Tulsa, OKC and one more county but I forgot which one. Maybe Cleveland.)

Please hire lawmakers who understand and this issue and will help. We have great lawmakers for HSCC's area, but unless lawmakers in the rural outlying counties agree, then nothing can be done for any county. Amazingly, some of the urban lawmakers from the biggest cities are the ones who won't support the laws we'd like to achieve. That's why its important to vote for (and support) animal advocates everywhere for lawmakers and civic posts.

Your story made me cry and my hat is off to you with all your animals and the love and care you provide them! I must admit I now have 7 dogs and 2 cats, and all but 2 were strays or shelter dogs that we took in! We have a great family but it's mind boggling how many animals need homes! I encourage anyone who can to help out all of us as volunteers at the HSCC - there's a special place in heaven for those who love animals and the work I do there gives back much more than I could ever give.
