Supporting Shelter: St. Tammany Humane Society

Pros: Wonderful place, very caring

Cons: facility is old and in need of updating

I have been to many shelters around the Lousiana area, but this one is outstanding. First of all it is a no kill shelter. Everything they take in is cared for, rehomed and NOT euthanized for lack of space or treatable medical conditions. The medical care these animals receive is unusual in the shelter community. The shelter has a full service veterinary hospital that serves the needs of the shelter animals and also is available to the public. All profits from the public hospital go directly into the care of the shelter pets. I was speaking to the director and he was explaining to me about recent cases where shelter animals were referred to a specialist by the shelter veterinarian for surgeries not available at the shelter. There is a "Second Chance Fund" that the public can donate to to help pay for these medical costs. This shelter does not receive any taxpayer dollars to help support it. As a private nonprofit organization it subsists solely on fundraising, donations, and any profits from the medical clinic.
One thing that does need attention is the building. The facility is over 50 years old. Although the staff has gone a long way in modernizing it, many areas could be improved if the funds were available.
I have both adopted animals from the shelter and my pets are patients of the hospital. This is a great place.

Harry is correct. St Tammany Humane Society is in Covington Louisiana in St Tammany Parish. The shelter you are thinking of is the Animal Control shelter in Tangipahoa parish.

I ,too ,frequent this shelter's clinic often but I was not aware of the "SECOND CHANCE" fund.Occasionally I see a jar on the counter with a picture of an animal who needs help getting certain medical attention but doesn't have the finances and I donate.Next time I go I'll be sure to make a donation to this much needed fund. The people that work at this shelter are the best!!!!

Beware of assuming anything about this shelter - appearances can be deceiving. The back story is much different than the facade. If anyone thinks that this shelter is not euthanizing many, many animals - they are wrong. It is just being done indirectly. Animals are "transferred" from here frequently. While there are some WONDERFUL people working and volunteering here, what this shelter's management and board is really good at is publicity and spin.
