Supporting Shelter: St. Tammany Humane Society

Supporting Rescue: Louisiana Boxer Rescue

Pros: Having worked there, I know the place inside and out. It's full of special people and special pets looking for a forever home. They are loved and cared for by the staff as if they were their own personal pets, which they surely are as long as they live at STHS.

Cons: Just needs a makeover to a very old building in need of repairs and expansion. They receive new animals every day, some found outside the gate in boxes or tied to the fence, or found on the side of the road by caring individuals.

I have adopted 2 dogs from STHS, a Golden/Catahoula mix who was a Katrina puppy and a "Dorky" (dachsund/yorkie) mix found in the Walmart parking lot as a baby. I also worked there for 3 years and have firsthand knowledge of just how much the staff in all departments care about the animals above all else. We always had one or two in the directors office and running around socializing. Our director at the time was Beth Brewster who now heads up the shelter in St. Bernard. We had a chow that had been with us for 7 years, agressive toward men and many were afraid of her. Beth started bringing her into her office and she turned out to be just scared and in need of love. She now is a treasured member of Beth's family. I was a foster parent of brand new pups, bottle feeding and keeping them safe until they were old enough to go into the shelter to find a good home. There are many volunteers who do this same thing and most of the staff have had "sleepover" guests for short and long visits.
This shelter is full of loving people who if given the makeover would surely make the very best of it and be able to help the helpless in more ways than they do now. CG
