In March 2007, Pets Without Parents (PWP) contracted with Mason County to operate it's animal shelter. The shelter is located in a remote village of Teheran. The building is in need of many repairs and our hope is to build a shelter in a more central part of Mason County. We currently have 9 dog kennels and 8 cat cages.
PWP was formed in 2004 and has been a licensed shelter to operate a foster based program, which we still continue today.
Our mission is to provide humane and ethical treatment of all companion animals including stray, homeless, abused and the unwanted. To accomplish this we foster these animals until an adoptive home can be found that will care for them properly. Our next priority is to facilitate the spay and neuter of all companion animals n our community and to educate the public on the humane treatment of all animals.
In 4 years
PWP has adopted 854 dogs and cats
PWP has rescued 1,641 dogs and cats from county animal shelters; transferring them to no-kill rescue groups where they have been adopted to forever homes.
PWP has facilitated the spay & neuter of over 2,400 dogs and cats
PWP has distributed over 12 TONS of dog and cat food to families in need
PWP has conducted over 300 humane investigations
PWP has assisted more than 100 families with funds for emergency vet care
PWP contracts with Mason County to operate their animal shelter and has reduced the euthanasia rate from over 90% to 16% in 26 months, saving the lifes of 1,222 dogs and cats
PWP has joined forces with ASPCA & HSUS to put an end to Puppy Mills
PWP has made several upgrades at the shelter including dog beds, replaced the rabbit cages with stainless steel cat cages, built a fence & outdoor runs so the dogs could exercise & set up a protocol of preventative medicine so all animals are vaccinated & treated for parasites upon admission.
We are proud of what we have accomplished the past 5 years & how we have positively impacted the animals and people of our communities. Unfortunately, given our agrarian population & lack of large population centers, we constantly struggle with placing large numbers of unwanted pets. We have no quarantine facility & no way to separate the cats from the dogs.
ZOOTOO SHELTER MAKE-OVER I
Our tiny group of dedicated, passionate volunteers worked tirelessly on the zootoo contest to climb from #940 to the top 20 IN 8 WEEKS! We made it to #8 and we still have the dream of a new shelter for Mason County!
