Supporting Shelter: Humane Society of Barron County

Supporting Rescue: Second Chance Animal Rescue

Pros: Good shelter

Cons: Last time I was here it was a kill shelter

We used to live in West Bend and have adopted from this shelter. They were a kill shelter then, don't know if they still are. I know sometimes this can't be helped but still hate to see a shelter kill animals.

I apologize for my comment if it was incorrect. I also have great respect for shelters and their staff. They provide a much-needed service. Washington County shelter is a great shelter in many ways. I only wrote from my experience in which I
clearly stated that I was unaware of the situation today. I think negative comments made about me personally or about "sour grapes"... are unnecessary

I do believe that a review should be based on personal experience. I was honest with what I said and I was clear about not knowing the current policies. This was my review based on my interactions with WCHS. Not all reviews of products and services will be 5's. I had no hidden motive for my comments.

WCHS does NOT euthanize for space...we only euthanize for aggression and serious illness. I am so proud of this shelter and how far we've come over the years. I've been here 20 years and have seen tremendous changes made.

I am also troubled that someone who lived in the area so long ago would negatively rate a shelter without knowing fully what that shelter stands for TODAY. I know how very hard all shelters work with so few resources. It saddens me that any of us would make those type of judgements. I have the utmost respect for every shelter and their staff.

I also agree that if you don't know how a shelter runs now, how can you rate them? I would hope that this woman would visit the shelter now and she would see how wonderful it is for the animals. WCHS does not euthanize for space and I feel so sad for those shelters who do not have enough room and have to euthanize, however, I certainly would not hold that against them. Too bad she had to review a place she obviously hasn't been to in many, many years!

Oh my goodness, this is very troubling. And to use the word kill! WCHS is a wonderful shelter that DOES NOT euthanize animals for space, only if an animal is too agressive to safely place or is very seriously ill. WCHS is a fabulous facility, the best, with an outstanding staff that that is caring, loving and goes above and beyond for all the animals. Each and every animal that passes through the door is treated with love and respect. They are given a second chance and every opportunity to find thier forever homes, opportunities that DO NOT include being euthanized for space or time. They stay at this shelter, their temporary loving home and family and they are given every opportunity for as long as it may take to find that new forever home. I can't say enough good about this shelter. I've volunteered at WCHS for many years and the love and caring that I see at this shelter is beyond words. My life and heart have been blessed by this facility, the staff, the animals, the volunteers, the friends, the people that pass through the doors. Each brings joy beyond words. This review angers me and really really hurts my heart. This person is obviously not educated about this wonderful shelter and therefore should not have submitted a review.

I, too, am amazed that someone can make a comment without really knowing an organization. I am proud to be a member of WCHS and fully support them BECAUSE of their enormous efforts on behalf of the animals. I can't imagine an organization that goes above and beyond more than this one. And maybe they euthanized for space long ago...but not in the last 10-12 years that I've been involved.

Wow, aside from being totally out-of-touch with what happens at the WCHS, I question if maybe this person is writing a negative comment because we over-took Barron County in the ratings? Sorry, but sure sounds like sour grapes to me!

It's obvious this person hasn't bothered to find out the facts about The WCHS, and she feels it's totally acceptable to start a "whisper" campaign to damage the reputation of this shelter. This infuriates me!

How can you rated a shelter you know nothing about. WCHS is a wonderful shelter. They do not euthanize for space so therfor can not be considered a kill shelter. They care very deeply for the animals there and will do everything possible to find them the perfect home no matter how long it takes. I would hope that in the future you would visit the shelter you are rating and know how they really are run before commenting on them.
