Supporting Shelter: The Washington County Humane Society, Inc.

Pros: Great staff, well organized, great volunteers - all in all, really terrific!

Cons: Can't think of any, unless you consider that the shelter really needs more resources.

I can't say enough good things about the staff of WCHS. We adopted Lucky (domestic shorthair cat) from WCHS in April, 2004. In March of that year, our beloved Golden Retriever Chance passed away from kidney failure. We knew we wanted another pet, but couldn't bear to think about getting another dog so soon after Chance left us. So, my daughter decided she really wanted a cat. We went to WCHS and began to look around, looking for that special someone. When we went into one of the cat rooms with cages, we caught sight of a 9-month old cat named "Lucky" - that seemed in keeping with the name our dog had had, and struck us as a potential omen. A staffperson was kind enough to get Lucky out of his cage, where he settled in on my daughter's lap. It was meant to be.

However, Lucky had already been identified for adoption by someone else. Rather disappointed, we set about looking for another potential pet, but our hearts had already been captured. The staff person noticed this, and said she might be able to work something out...

We got a phone call later that day from the same staff person saying she had talked with the people who were slated to take Lucky home, and convinced them to adopt a different cat. Needless to say, we were thrilled! We brought him home the day after that. He hid under the recliner for several days, but eventually came out to explore. (You wouldn't know it when you look at him now - the whole house is obviously his...). It's been an adventure with Lucky - in the beginning, once he became familiar with his surroundings, he would jump out at us randomly - he seemed to take great delight in startling us. Also, he sucks on his tail before he falls asleep - pretty cute (he sometimes falls asleep on his head while doing that - awkward). We owe a great deal of thanks to WCHS for their help in finding Lucky's forever home with us (pictures of both pets are posted under picture reviews).

Our adoption of Lucky went so well, we adopted Griffin (Golden Retriever/Beagle mix) from WCHS the following year. The staff helped us identify a dog with an appropriate temperament for our family, and the adoption went smoothly. Griffin has also been a great match for our family, and gets along with Lucky (but Lucky rather picks on Griffin, I'm afraid). In the meantime, we've become staunch supporters of WCHS - after all, they've given us several members of our family! I thoroughly recommend WCHS for anyone looking to give an animal in need a home.
