Pros: The best staff and volunteers around!

Cons: There never seems to be enough space for all the animals

I worked for the Washington County Humane Society for two years (2004-2006). I had to leave when I got married and moved to Indiana. Two years later, I still miss the place like crazy. Every time we return to Wisconsin to see my family, I stop in to see my other family. That's just what WCHS is, it's a second home, not only for the animals but for all those who come and go through the doors. The minute you enter the building, you know that you are someone special. Someone is always eager to show you around and help you find your perfect match. The staff knows the animals and understands them. It wasn't always easy watching our favorites go out the door, but we knew that they were finding a better place than even we could offer them.
Working there, I quickly realized that even though the building looks huge - there is never enough space! Dragging out extra kennels to make space for the next cat that walks in the door. Making an office into a stray cat intake room . . . Using the bathtub room as a puppy kennel so they have extra room to run and play . . . having to keep a ferret/hamster/bird/or other small animal in the hall so it's safely out of any room with a cat in it. There's so much love in that shelter, but there could be so much more with extra space. We never turn an animal away, but I know the thought of "where are we going to find room for another one" crossed our minds many times. The WCHS is an amazing place to work, volunteer, and find your forever friend, but it would be all that more amazing if they had more space to do the job that needs to be done!
