Additional Information

We are strictly a no-kill shelter for domestic rabbits, founded in 2005. Currently, we rent a warehouse in Plymouth, MI. It is pretty cramped, but we make the best of what we have. It is amazing how much we've done with the generosity of others. We are solely run by volunteers HELPING BUNNIES HELPING PEOPLE. Our mission is to rescue and re-home domestic rabbits, while working together with our community to make our environment a better place.

With Michigan's poor economy, we take in many rabbits from people who have lost their jobs and/or their homes. Did you know Michigan has the highest unemployment rate in the country? We try to take each rabbit, but sometimes it's not possible. Currently, we have about 160 rabbits. If we can't take them, we post them on Petfinder.com until space is available. It is really hard, but once you are a resident guest here at our shelter you can stay for as long as you live.

Our residents are not just Michigan natives. Some have traveled as far as Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. There are not many rescues for rabbits. Rabbits are the third most popular pet after dogs and cats, and they continue to grow in popularity. For now, we make room for new guests when we can. Our goal truly is to find everyone a loving home of their own!

On a side note, our policy is that all bunnies who are adopted may be returned if there are any problems. Adopters sign agreements stating that if for any reason that they need to surrender, that they will bring them back. These furry guys are our friends. Sometimes it doesn't work out. In those cases, we definitely want to make sure that they are taken care of. We encourage potential adopters to come and visit. Adopters don't have to decide in 2 minutes, the rabbits aren't a pair of shoes. The rabbit you choose could be your best friend for a decade or more!

As I mentioned before, we are solely run by volunteers. All donations go to caring for the rabbits. In order to help keep things running, we have fund-raisers throughout the year. Last fall, we had a "Bowling for Bunnies" event which was fun and profitable. Our "Hops for Hope" benefit is coming up quickly, on March 22nd. It is a fun event with chocolate and beer tasting, featuring the makeminechocolate.org campaign, which encourages people to buy chocolate instead of a real rabbit for Easter. Rabbits are not an impulsive purchase, and we promote careful thought in adoption.

Besides earning money from adoption fees, we also have a variety of ongoing fund-raisers. We collect used cell phones and ink jet cartridges, and are registered at IGIVE.com, goodsearch.com. We work with both Kroger's and Hiller's selling rechargeable gift cards, earning 5% from our collective spending on groceries.

We aren't just about the rabbits. We are very earth friendly and try to help our planet too. Since we produce compost materials (and LOTS of it) fresh daily, we advertise to local gardeners / farmers. This "organic compost" is very rich. Did you know rabbit poop is one of the best compost materials out there, next to goat poop? On average, we produce 30 big garbage bags a week, which we would rather not see go to a landfill. Buckets filled with compost from litter boxes (Pestal, compressed sawdust, and poop) can be put down directly on your garden without the worry of burning. It acts as a deterrent for wild rabbits too!

We are always trying to improve what we have. Winning this contest would mean so much to our shelter. Currently, we don't even have our own bathroom. Not that it's that important, but it would be incredible to our volunteer not to have to walk down to the other end of the parking lot. We have a small wash tub we call a sink, that has an extremely small hot water tank. The wall got a small face lift last summer, with a fresh coat of paint. But there is still so much work to do.

Our volunteers all have diverse backgrounds (a nurse, a teacher, an artist, a realtor, a tax accountant, a mason, a beautician, a legal secretary, a home-care giver, college students, high school students and more...) and family lives. We really are people helping bunnies helping people!

PLEASE VOTE FOR MIDWEST (48170) RABBIT RESCUE AND REHOME!!!! You might think you are just one vote..but IT WOULD BE THE WORLD TO US!!!
