The Humane Society of Monroe County is a limited intake, no-kill shelter housing 25 dogs and 75-90 cats in a tiny, fifty year old building. We call ourselves the little shelter with the big heart. In spite of the age and limited space and funding we do everything possible to make our shelter residents' stays as pleasant as possible. We've made the cat adoption room into a partially free-roaming space, built an outside screened cat enclosure through an Eagle Scout project, and added free-standing outdoor kennels so that our dogs can spend time outside, all with donated funds and volunteers.
If a cat or dog comes to us with an illness or injury that can be treated and result in a good quality of life, we never deny treatment, whether it be broken legs, heartworm infection, parvo, whatever. No animal is euthanized for lack of space even with our very limited space.
We understand that shelters alone, without reducing the population of animals, will never solve the problem of too many animals and too few homes. For this reason we created our SPOT (Stop Pet Overpopulation Today) Program to provide spay/neuter services for the companion animals of residents with financial challenges and those caring for stray and feral cats. In the first year of the program we provided surgeries for 355 cats, dogs, puppies and kittens.
All of our work is accomplished through donations, special events, grants, and adoption fees. For our hard-working staff, this isn't just a job, it's a calling. So much is accomplished in our current small, inadequate space - just think what we could do with more.
