Supporting Shelter: The Almost Home Humane Society

Supporting Rescue: Love of Labs

Pros: Large selection of adoptable animals so there's one for almost any living situation, Great spay/neuter policy, etc.

Cons: Not enough community outreach, sometimes disorganized

The Almost Home Humane Society was my first stop when I decided I wanted a kitten to keep me company while I was attending Purdue University. I stopped in several times and played with the cats. They have an offsite adoption area, which I assume means that the cats are allowed to go and be adopted at other locations because they are already spayed or neutered...that's where I found Lexie. I fell in love with this cat, but unfortunately, she became ill and they had to move her to another room away from the other cats. They were very open and honest with me about the situation, and offered foster care as an alternative, but with my school schedule I couldn't make the commitment. The shelter staff seemed like they really cared about each and every animal. They have quite a big job, taking care of all of those animals. Recently I heard they had to make some really tough decisions regarding intake, and I just hope they can overcome these obstacles and thrive again. If you're looking for a best friend, you should stop in and take a look at the many dogs and cats that are also looking for a friend. Talk to the Almost Home Humane Society shelter staff about your lifestyle...chances are, they can make a great recommendation that will leave both you and your family happy.
