Humane Society of Cumberland County

The Humane Society of Cumberland County is located on East Lane Rd., off Hwy 127 South. Our mission is the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering animals, community education for the benefit of animals and provisions for spay and neuter programs. We provide temporary shelter for the over 4000 unwanted, abandoned and abused animals of Cumberland County annually. Our goal is to return lost animals to their owners, find suitable homes for the majority of those without owners, and unfortunately, to provide humane euthanasia where required.
We currently are able to house only 70 dogs and 50 cats at full capacity. The majority of our dog kennels are outside, most with more than one dog per pen. We have only 7 indoor/outdoor runs for puppies and small dogs. We have 2 community cat rooms and one kitten room.
The shelter is located on top of an old dump site. The facility was never originally intended to be a shelter and is in great need of an addition and general repairs and improvements. We would love to see a new addition with indoor/outdoor runs that would allow us to house more animals. The outdoor pens are currently seperated only by panels of chain-link fence, which allows diseases such as kennel cough, parvo, and distemper to pass much more readily. We hope to see new partitions of brick or block to help us better control such diseases. We also would like to see improvements to the current drainage system that is in place.
