The Humane Society of the Nature Coast focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing abandoned, abused and neglected pets. We are a volunteer supported organization with a minimal staff to oversee the day to day care of the pets who temporarily reside with us. The facility is far too small to serve our current population. For every pet we take in we are forced to turn away 5-10 pets per day due to a lack of space. Much of our land cannot be used due to septic and drainfield issues. This makeover would enable us to connect to the local sewer system and enable us to build an addition on the currently unusable land.

Flooding and hurricanes have been a constant problem for us and the addition that we will build will meet hurricane 3 standards and double as an evacuation center for our community pets as well as our shelter pets.

Having served the community for 44 years the staff and volunteers of Humane Society of the Nature Coast dedicate themselves to providing a happy and healthy environment for every animal in their care with a no time limit policy. Through a solid relationship with Hernando County Animal Services animals are transferred from Animal Services to the Humane Society of the Nature Coast and other groups saving countless pets from needless euthanasia, lowering the number of animals put to death in our community by 12% last year.

Through community events and off-site adoption programs the Humane Society of the Nature Coast reaches out to families to educate and facilitate the adoption of homeless pets. Medical care and training are essential parts of our rehabilitation program for the pets in our care. Families are screened and interviewed then spend time with potential pets in our 'get acquainted' yards to assure a good match and relieve stress for the animals.

Currently we have a free roaming, cageless environment for the adoptable cats at our cat cottage and our goal is to build a new modern building with proper boarding rooms for our dogs. After formulating a growth plan with mentor and advisor, Warren Cox of the SPCA of Lakeland, and the input from countless animal shelters across the country during the past 6 years, a local engineer has donated and developed a site plan for our property. All that is needed now is the additional funding.

The Humane Society of the Nature Coast aggressively pursues continuing education for all staff members to keep up with the best practices of animal welfare and encourage career development in this field.

Past President, Paul Montante was recognized as the 2006 Humane Volunteer of the Year for the state of Florida by Governor and Mrs. Bush, as well as the Humane Society of the Nature Coast being selected as the Community Service Organization of the Year for both 2004 and 2005 by the Greater Hernando Chamber of Commerce. This award was in recognition of the programs developed and offered by the Humane Society. These programs include Safe Harbor 4 Pets to foster the pets of domestic abuse victims, foster homes for the pets of deployed military men and women, educational programs offered in our schools and nursing home and assisted living facility visits to the elderly. The Humane Society invites youth groups at risk and citizens with disabilities to visit the shelter and socialize with our pets for the benefit of all.

The Humane Society of the Nature Coast abides by a code of conduct which respects all organizations and individuals with the best interests of animals as a priority. A spirit of hope, camaraderie and compassion fuels the individuals who dedicate themselves to the Humane Society and the animals in their care.

The Humane Society of the Nature Coast is a charter member of the Coalition for Animal Welfare of West Central Florida and we wish each shelter on Zootoo the best of luck in the Makeover Contest and far beyond.
