Supporting Shelter: LIBERTY HUMANE SHELTER, GEORGIA

Supporting Rescue: Bryan Animal Caregivers

Pros: This place has changed!

Cons: This place needs to be bulldozed!

Where do I start?
I am not sure I am the best one to review this shelter. This shelter has my heart, these animals have my heart and soul and this mission that I am on has got to take this shelter to a better place.
Over 2 years ago, I went to a meeting.. WOW!
I was oblivious to the fact that the Liberty Humane Shelter received no funding from the county or state or federal government..I could not believe my ears...
So, we set off to raise funds for the shelter. And we did...but it is never enough!
It took me a few weeks to go by and WOW I could not believe my eyes.. I could not stand it..
At the next meeting, I explained that we would be glad to help raise funds but that the funds we helped raise "had" to be used to improve the conditions for the animals... The existing board approved our requests and asked what we had in mind..
Well, right after the fund raiser was over, the President was ill and stepped down from her presidency... I agreed to fill in temporarily...
Well, here I am!
The building was painted, the parking lot was graded to prevent the flooding to the building, the bathroom got new fixtures, the cats got new kennels, the dogs got new kennels inside and the outside kennels were fixed to accomodate outside play..The carport was closed in, insulated, heated and air conditioned. Another shed was made into a 2nd quarantine area. More staff was hired, some were fired, meds were bought, cleaning procedures were started and enforced. Vets were
consulted and a plan of action was put into play.
IMPROVEMENTS WERE MADE! That was 2007!
Still, there is only so much you can do when you have so little to work with.
In 2008 the cat rooms were built thanks to our angel, Dawn. We got another quarantine shed to make it 3. A tub was put in to wash our dishes in because we were using buckets. More hook ups were put in for washing machines because we do about 10 loads a day. Some electrical work was
done to help with lighting. Some more paint was put on in April on the floors and look at them now..Some concrete was poured for the puppy
pads outside so they can go out without touching the dirt--because our dirt kills puppies...
And a few dozen other projects were started and completed...
Many more are in the works but MONEY is the factor here.. No money, no improvements...
The building is old old old.. It was an old house..
The electrical is down right dangerous. The plumbing is a joke, I can not count the number of times I have plundged the toilet and the drains.
The hot water heater is not hooked up because we need an electrician to hook it up. There is only one water pump, both facilities can not clean at the same time.
The grounds have had so many animals on it over the years, I am convinced it is infested with the parvo virus. Cross contamination is a real factor here... Our animals are exposed daily to germs and diseases because we are in the same facility as animal control. Even Department of Agriculture recommends separation of the two facilities if possible.. The walls move, actually that is our roaches and mice..even though it is sprayed monthly, the place is infested. The parking lot is a mess all the time. It is amazing the animals are in as good shape as they are...
The bottom line is... we are here for the animals.
We are committed to make their stay with us as comfortable as possible until their forever family comes for them..
WE NEED HELP, WE WANT TO DO MORE BUT WE DO NOT HAVE THE MEANS TO DO IT..

HELP US HELP THEM!

In 2001 or so I adopted several cats from Liberty Humane Shelter. It was a mess. They had no shelters, other than dog houses, for the dogs and it was HOT. The yard smelled like dog poop. The cats were confined to their small cages day in and day out. The staff was rude and the existing board... well, I won't get personal.

I offered to volunteer at LHS at the time and I was totally amazed at their response! I offered to buy a digital camera, pay for and setup their website, take pictures of the new animals and list them on the web and so on. I wasn't offered to attend any meeting, the manager just took down the info and presented it to the existing board. The response was simply amazing. "Write up a contract" they said and they would think about it. That was 2001.

I went back in April of 2008 and wow, things were totally different! The cats had one cat pen and were not confined to their small cages all day. The dogs had their own building with concrete, heat and air and it smelled good. The office assistant was extremely polite. The dogs and cats were healthier, fatter and their fur was shiny. I was amazed. And I was motivated. I now volunteer full time and I just love it.

Sandra F. didn't mention that she is the new President of the Liberty Humane Shelter and she has brought this place a long way from the sorry state it was in!
Her heart and thoughts are always at the shelter.

It is obvious that your heart is with this shelter as is mine. I am determined to diligently work until major improvements are made. I adopted the love of my life (Precious) there in 1987. She lived 17 years. I adopted the love of my baby girl's life there in 1990. I called her my million dollar dog as she was heart worm positive, and I treated her twice before we lost her 11 years later. As far as I can see, other than a new pic on the house and a few minor repairs, not much has been done to help this shelter. I cannot imagine the staff's frustration. It is the community's responsibility to support this shelter, although I believe the military bears some responsibility. I will join with you and help. I do not even know anything about "meetings.", but I will attend if you will inform me. As a community, we should be ashamed. Julee

I agree with your review. I adopted two cats from there in 2007 and it was already better than it had been earlier that year. I wanted to help with the cats, to be a cuddle buddy volunteer, but I got ringworm from the two I adopted and cannot risk getting it over and over again to bring it back into my home. I donate as much as I can whenever I can. I also take my newspapers to their newspaper recycling bin behind Food Lion and my aluminum cans to their bin at the Humane Shelter. It is the community's responsibility, but it seems that we cannot teach compassion around here. I wish more local groups would partner with this organization to get more people involved, at least to see the conditions our shelter is in. If more people were made aware -- in person, then I really think they would take personal action as I have. The newspaper articles and the events that promote the shelter are always great, but it's just never enough. I wish I could really afford to do more, but I'm here on Zootoo.com to make the only difference I can. Thank you for being a full time volunteer and for helping so much! You are an angel to these animals.

I have to idolize Sandra F. and her staff in the fight for our 4 legged buddies. I wish I could help more than I have. They are so friendly and work so hard to save our strays from certain death. This shelter has come a long way but still needs some very strong backing to to accomplish what God has set before them to do.It is our job as pet owners to help in any way we can no matter how little it may be.Next time your floorboard is littered with soda cans stop by the shelter and drop em in the bin.Be nice, no trash please.
