Supporting Shelter: LIBERTY HUMANE SHELTER, GEORGIA

Pros: The staff REALLY wants to make this a better place seperate from Animal Control.

Cons: Rusty cages, poor ventilation, oldest buildings, no dog runs, understaffed, and Animal Control animals housed in same areas.

I have been trying to get help for this shelter for over a year now. I have written to main organizations (SPCA, etc) with no responses. Just last week, I went by because I wanted to adopt a kitten. It was closed down due to a parvo outbreak. However, the manager turned me onto ZooToo. I have written the Coastal Courier Editor about this, and he has said he will help. I have practically lived on this site this week.

This shelter needs SO much. It is worse than any puppy mill you might see on "Animal Planet." I adopted my dog, Precious, from here in 1987. Nothing has changed except for a poorly ventilated puppy building. As this is a military town, we take the overload demand when men are deployed and the post shelter becomes full. It is heartbreaking to know our boys have to worry about leaving their animals in this appalling place AND worry about going to war.

It is not the staff's fault. It is a no kill shelter and, simply, does not have the funds. They NEED to win the makeover, especially since the main goal of our town is to assist our military while they are here away from home. Some say they should not get dogs, but I feel they need dogs even more than we do as they ARE away from home.

Please, please help this shelter be what the community and staff so desperately want it to be.

YES, YES, YES! I KNEW we could do it! I feel like a winner from just being involved in this wonderful process. I feel for the other shelters, but view them as winners, too. I can't think of anyone who deserves it (and needs it)more. Faith, Belief, and Community are an unbeatable combination. I'd like to say thank you to ALL our affiliates and friends, especially our military families. We couldn't have done it without you. NOW, let's get to work:-). Julee

How many thousands of people did your letter to the editor reach? Didn't you ask people in your letter to come onto to Zootoo on their behalf? Do you see the lack of response? Now do you see why Liberty Humane Shelter is in the condition that it is? The community doesn't care; only a handful of dedicated staff and volunteers.

I sure hope Zootoo cares. And since this is a military community, where is the military, since the majority of the abandoned pets come from them? What a shame. Thanks for your referral in the newspaper, but please, don't cut their throats in the process of trying to help them.

Please do stop by and see the conditions of the facility under the new President. Yes, the building is atrocious! But the animals are healthy and the facility is clean. Just because the paint is coming off the floors (see my picture review) doesn't mean the floors are dirty. Just because they can't afford pretty paint, doesn't mean the walls are dirty. Just because the washer needs to be hit to run doesn't mean the laundry isn't done.

By the way, do you know an electrician? They need their larger hot water heater hooked up as the old one rusted through at the bottom. They are desperate for that. I bought all the supplies, I just need an electrician to hook it up.

Hi Julee,
Please come by the shelter.. I would love to personally show you around and
show you our high points and our low points.
I am the first one to say "we have come a long way but we still need help"
and that is an understatement. The conditions out there have greatly improved but there is only so much that can be done with a 60year old building..
The dirt is infested with the parvo virus, the water system barely supports both facilities, we only have one bathroom, the drainage and sewage is another story, the smell is deep into the concrete which means the disease is still there, the
electrical is amazing that it is still working, and I could go on and on..
But, one thing you will not see when you visit is the poor little pitiful shelter dog and cats.
We have fat cats laid up in their cat room that they free roam in!
We have healthy clean dogs that are not hungry because they are fed two times every day and if they are still hungry they get more..
We have well mannered dogs that go through the NILIF program and learn to behave.
Every animal that leaves the shelter has atleast 2 sets of shots and in most cases 3, has been wormed, tested for fiv/felv or heartworms, has been temperment tested, been spayed/neutered, and microchipped!
But again we can only do what we can and what we have control of.
We had the control to make the shelter the best we could given the circumstances and conditions and more importantly make it better for the animals.. we care for these animals as if they are our own until someone
comes to take them home...
Please continue to help us strive to make things better for the animals.
Please continue to help us raise money to get a better environment for THEM!

Again, I do not know how you guys keep your spirits intact working daily facing these challeges. However, the lady I spoke with who gave me the ZooToo card was extremely courteous and patient with me (I am a talker:-). I just returned home Jan. 2007 and have just gotten back online. Therefore, I do not know of an electrician, but I will ask my church if we have one willing to help. I mailed out friend requests last night, but only have a few. I hope they reply. Please know I am working diligently to help us win the makeover or, at the very least, get our community interested. Take care. Julee

The shelter has made many, many, many improvements over the years......If you think nothing has changed since 1987 you must have gone to the wrong place.......I want to thank the group of people that are there working hard every day....

Where YOU there in 1987. If not, how can you comment? As for my review, I have constantly given the staff kudos for their efforts in a difficult situation. However, there is still MUCH to do to make it a resourceful shelter. That does not mean it is anyone's fault. But to deny the truth IS NOT helpful for the animals or the staff, no matter how protective a person might feel. MC! Julee
