We are an adoption guaranteed facility, housing over 70 dogs and 100 cats at any one time. We are a 501c3 not for profit organization and all of our animals are spayed/neutered, HW tested, FELV/FIV tested, vaccinated and microchipped prior to adoption. We have a full time veterinarian on staff and rely on donations to fund our organization.
We are located in a largely rural area, where many people do not have computers and high-speed Internet is just a dream for many people. The Zootoo contest has been a challenge for us but determination and hard work have kept us in the top 20 for a long time. Many thanks to the librarians in our county libraries for helping new computer users sign up for the contest on the library computers. Some of our lucky supporters with wireless high speed Internet access have had "zootoo parties" for people with laptops to come to their houses and write reviews using faster Internet service than the slow dial-up connections that many local residents suffer through.
Our shelter conducted the "great Santa Paws Rescue" of Christmas Day, 2007, when we rescued 78 dogs from a backyard breeder. (Read more about it below on our reviews page) A few weeks before that, we rescued over 30 cats from filthy conditions at an apartment.
The needs are great in our community and the financial resources are limited. Our primary concern is always the welfare of the animals. That's why we are the only shelter on the Maryland Eastern Shore with a full time veterinarian on staff. That's why we spay/neuter all animals before adoption. That's why we have an open, no-cages cat room. That's why we test all dogs for heartworm and are one of the very few shelters that provide the difficult and expensive treatment for heartworm positive dogs. That's why we work with TNR groups for low-cost spay/neuter/ shots for feral cats.
And that is why we are working so hard to win the Zootoo contest. Because the animals come first.
