Supporting Shelter: Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue

Supporting Rescue: Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue Inc

Pros: The whole rescue!

Cons: NONE!!!!

My first experience with Jo was in June of 2007 when I called her out of the blue to see if she had room for a Thoroughbred that we saw at an auction that was going for slaughter. She gave it a thought for about two seconds before saying ok no problem I need two weeks time to rehome another horse to make room for him. She didn't know or care at that time if this horse made 50 cents in his career or that this horse turned out to be named Whats Up Lonely the 2004 Maryland Million Nursery Stakes winner. She knew he needed a place to go and she was more then willing to take him in. Turns out the foster home who agreed to keep him for the two weeks that Jo made room for Whats Up fell madly in love with him and refused to see him go anywhere after all so Jo got off the hook that time but, kept in touch with me well after that and always asked how he was doing.

In August of 2007 our boarding barn went on fire and we had to scramble to place the 11 horses that lived there(none of the horses were injured or killed). Jo asked consistantly if there was anything she could do to help. And yet again always asked how everyone was doing.

I still at this point never met Jo or donated one dime to her or the rescue- she owed me NOTHING yet managed to make herself available for any type of advise or help she could offer.

Then in April of 2008 I lost my beloved Nickyboy ( a one eyed Shih Tzu) who for all intents and purposes was my son. I couldn't have felt any lower then suffering the loss of him. A friend suggested that I start a memorial fund in his name to a rescue to try and divert my attention to help cope with my grief. Instantly I thought of Jo and Angel Acres. I contacted Jo to let her know I typed a letter to some of my friends and she may recieve some donations under Nicky's name. Well she went to work again and made a memorial page on her website for Nicky. I only expected a few donations for her exisiting horses expences. But, she contacted me and said they were pulling a new horse and gave me the honor of naming him. I cannot begin to express what that meant to me to have something so positive to focus on instead of that unbearable grief I had been so consumed with. Jo kept me updated on how Jake was doing and that there was a few potential homes.

Finally it came down to it and I guess Jo found the right home for Jake and she contacted me and asked if I wanted to come and meet him before he went on to start his new life in his new home. So off we went to meet Jo, Jake, Maui, and Goldie Jackie and Fran. I cannot express what it was like to finally meet all of them-especially the star Jake. To know that something so positive could come out of what I felt was the worst time of my life and I owe that all to Jo.

Jo who despite the fact that she had a million other things to do...made the time for me and for him to finally meet.

Jake will always have a very special place in my heart and so will Jo and Angel Acres.

What other rescue does things like this for people who they don't even know? Not only did she manage to save another wonderful horse but, she saved me as well.

Thank you Jo.
