Harrisburg East Shore Shelter

Pros: Pet friendly staff
Cons: Overcrowded conditions
I feel this shelter would most deserve a makeover due to the fact that it's our only shelter here in Harrisburg, PA. We used to have 2, but they just recently closed the shelter on the west shore. The shelter is so overcrowded that there is hardly enough room for all of the animals. We need some help, they do not receive any state or federal funding, they survive off of donations and fundraisers, like our yearly walk/run that we do every Spring. The are in desperate need of some remodeling so we can make more room for our poor animals who need a warm place to stay and eat. PLEASE HELP!

Your comments are definitely very true. I noticed on one of my visits they are so overcrowded animals that had to be quaranteened were in one of their examining rooms with a curtain and a sign not to enter without gloves and body cover. There was no place big enough to take care of the very ill or contagious animals dropped off at the shelter. Living solely from donations they do a decent job of caring for the animals but there are so many since the West Shore Shelter closed they just can't keep this up without more room. Now since my husband passed maybe I can volunteer for this wonderful shelter with excellent staff and volunteers.
The staff of The Harrisburg Humane Society is top-notch. We need this shelter to survive as it's the only large animal shelter in the greater Harrisburg area and needs to enlarge due the fact it's now taking in a greater number of animals than ever. It strives to provide humane care for just about every type of animal that comes its way and opens its door and hearts when others won't.
