Pros: No kill shelter!
Cons: Need new shelter
I absolutely love Washington Area Humane Society! I have been volunteering there since July. We are one of very few no-kill shelters in the Pittsburgh area. We have 3 humane officers working with us and a very hardworking staff. I mainly volunteer as a dog walker. Please pass it on, we need more dog walkers! Some of my fellow volunteers have been working hard to improve our dog walking areas lately so that we have more trails. Things are looking good so far, but of course, we could really use this makeover, support, and more volunteers! I really really enjoy volunteering, and I hope you'll come join our mission of helping the homeless, unwanted, and abused animals of southwestern PA!

Lauren has been a consistent volunteer at the shelter, demonstrating great interest in walking the dogs and promoting their adoption. WAHS would benefit from the make over, as this shelter is dependent upon people who do not have the luxury of not having to work ( as appears to be the case with another Pittsburgh area shelter). This shelter lacks the physical size, upgrades, monies, finished trails and scenic woodlands of other shelters. WASH does have, however, a very dedicated group of volunterrs who travel some distances to help with the animals. Although WAHS is certainly no showcase, it does exhibit what can be accomplished by dedicated persons with true love for these animals. I commend Lauren for her assistance at the shelter and her obvious love of these animals.
Thank you for volunteering. I too have been a volunteer for a year now... and really enjoy walking the dogs. Agreed - we definitely need more volunteers to walk the dogs and I hate to leave the shelter if all the dogs haven't been taken out - so more volunteers, please!! Lauren, thank you also for finding a home for Midnight who had been at the shelter for almost three years!! See you on the weekends, Diane
Thank you for the kind things that many of you have said in your comments. I wish I had the time and energy to do way more than I do, but until I win the Powerball . . . kidding, sort of. I just wanted to mention for anyone who might happen to read this that I read a quote by an employee of Best Friends Animal Society (my favorite "big time" companion animal non-profit) that the best way to help animal/pet welfare is at the LOCAL level, with your local shelter and community.....when she said that she was referring to all levels of support, such as financial, community awareness, and hands on volunteer action. The "big time" animal welfare non profits routinely pull in millions each year (many many millions) so considering financial support to local shelters is an option. . . and it's how I choose to spend what resources I have and give my time and energy to. I am not tootin' my horn or anything, just offering my perspective (not that anyone asked!) and some food for thought. Lauren
