Pros: Dedicated, loving staff and volunteers
Cons: Shelter needs constant work and repairs
My daughter and I have volunteered at the WAHS for over a year. The staff and volunteers are dedicated, loving and caring. Everytime we go to the shelter to walk dogs, we don't want to leave because we think there might be someone who didn't get walked enough today or didn't get petted or loved enough today. I like many other volunteers, wish every animal could come home with me. The WAHS is a no-kill shelter, which survives on donations. The shelter could use a facelift, the animals would love it.

We also volunteer at WAHS and always feel guilty when we see that all the dogs have not been walked, daily. It would be great to recruit people who don't have to work and have an interest in the animals, because not everyone who works can get there to walk the dogs ( shelter closes at 5 P.M.). In this respect, wouldn't it be great to secure some monies to install large lighting fixtures ( and to help pay for the electric bill) in the dog walk areas. I'm sure that the dogs would enjoy being outside, even if it were in the evenings. One of the Pittsburgh shelters has the luxury of having their dogs walked 4 times a day. Unfortunately, WAHS is not that shelter. On some days, the dogs don't get out, or so few get out that it breaks your heart. I know that if they were taken for more frequent walks, they would not be as hyper as they are, currently, which would in turn assit in their adoptions. We constantly seek more volunteers with an interest in walking the dogs or just maintining the kennel areas. We thank everyone who has contributed and request that you do not forget that we rely on your generosity to continue to maintain WAHS.
