Pros: The volunteers have big hearts
Cons: We always struggle with money
WAHS has come a long way in the past four years. It was running more than $60,000 in the red when I first started volunteering and this past year was the best finanacially in the last ten years due in large measure to many volunteer efforts in fundraising. In addition several key staff members have been instrumental in elevating the level or personalized customer service...an area in which a lot of improvement has been made and still more is needed.

Being a 4 year volunteer i also have seen the wonderful changes happening at the WAHS. The volunteers have taken on a tremendous amount of responsiblity for things like building pavilions, clearing the land, contructing play areas for the dogs, fund raising and lots more. We have a great group of volunteers and only wish we had more.
RE: Faye Klein and WAHS- Faye has been a tremendous help to a number of volunteers at this shelter ( myself included!). She has remarakble understanding of the dogs and never fails to help others who may need assistance. I am fascinated by her dedication and hope the shelter wins the makeover. It is only with the assistance and perserverance of people such as herself that shelters such as WAHS continue to operate. Faye recognizes the reality that WAHS may not be a showcase, but it cannot deter us from giving these animals the love and attention they deserve. It would be fabulous to win the makeover, because with the help of all the volunteers, I know that WAHS could compete with the "showier" humane societies in the Pittsburgh area and provide more space, better conditions and better advertising of the animals in residence. Unfortunately, some people seeking to adopt animals will only venture into the "prettier" shelters. If only they could see the love, dedication and hours that the volunteers of this shelter provide, they would understand that it's not solely about appearances. On behalf of the animals, I do hope this Agency wins the makeover. There are basic aspects which could be significantly improved with those monies!
I also agree with one comment that Faye is such an important person to this shelter. As busy as she is, she always returns my calls and answers any questions I may have. She has given me such good advice in how to handle my shelter dog . She knows about all of the dogs at the shelter and can answer any questions people may have about them. She conducts all of the volunteer meetings and keeps us up on the latest news. Above all of that, Faye is a real pet lover and takes time every day for her pets, no matter what the weather. I am glad to be a part of all of this.
I hope you win the contest, I would love to see a new shelter for all of you! I volunteered there years ago helping cleaning out the dog area, the cat cages and playing with the puppies. :) I would love to see a bigger, better "cat house" area, along with a larger dog area to accomadate all that you see every year. A nice huge dog park would be great too. :)
Anyway, if anyone in the area is interested in helping raise funds for the shelter, you should check out the local bowl-a-thon that can be used for organizations that need to fundraise. Just register to bowl, collect pledges and put the WAHS as the group you are helping fund on your sheets and they will get a % of your collected pledges to help the animals while you have a fun day out. HUGE THANK YOU to all the volunteers!!!!

I was glad to read your review because im volunterring right now for the Somerset Humane Society in Skowhegan Maine and they are having a hard time financilly due to some of the new state laws. We are not in the red but the funds are low and we are on the up side of making a diffenece in the finances right now. They were at a point that they were so low they had to lay of some help but it is coming up now. And when you said your shelter was $60,000 in the red and has turned around I can relate to what you are saying its hard for small shelters.
