FINALLY - a shelter that matches its programs and services to CURRENT needs of animals & people in its community ... and they're NOT AFRAID to change their services to better meet those needs!!

Supporting Shelter: SPCA Serving Erie County
Pros: They care about changing PEOPLE'S lives as well as the ANIMALS' lives.
Cons: That there are not more shelters like this locally or across the country
Great shelter, great variety of services, fair policies, clean facility, animals CLEARLY receiving appropriate love and attention, and a Web site that lets take a look behind the scenes, so we can see what goes into many of these animals before we see them on the adoption floor, and we can follow along with animal cruelty news stories as they're happening. But what I really like is that the staff is constantly updating its policies and services based on the newest animal research and findings out there. They don't keep one black and white policy in place that they've had for 50 years, because what we know about animals and their behavior and proper care and treatment has ADVANCED, and they advance their shelter programs along with the newest findings. Do you know there are new Cat Enrichment Programs there, in which a team of staff and volunteers monitor the day-to-day behavior of shelter cats that have spent weeks and months up for adoption, and as soon as those cats begin to exhibit signs of depression, their needs are immediately met....? Do you know they changed their policy on feral cats because the newest research proved that what this shelter and other shelters nationwide were doing to deal with feral cat populations was not HELPING, but quite possibly HURTING? Same thing with animal hoarders...the SPCA deals with this form of animal cruelty very differently than it used to, based on new knowledge of the animal hoarder mentality and what would best help these people. Overall, a shelter with vision, and a staff of people who put the animals first. We ALL need a shelter like this in our communities!!!
