Supporting Shelter: Potsdam Humane Society

Pros: Caring, knowledgable staff

Cons: Poor hours

I have adopted 3 family members from the Potsdam Human Society over the past 18 years. The first was Buddy who we had from a pup of 8 weeks to the day he passed on at the ripe ol' age of 13. He was a valuable family member filling our lives with excitement and love. He was a great big furry guy with lots of shedding hair and a thurst for running! Many a times he was sneaky and tried to get away from us but always returned to where he was loved! He was a little fluff ball who would melt your heart once you could get past the stare of his wolfy-like yellow eyes! We sorely miss Bud and hope there are many treats and squirrels to chase (his favorite pastime) in doggy heaven!

About 3 to 6 months after Bud's passing we adopted Koda. Koda came to us as a baby too, a fluffy bundle of Rotty joy! During the past 5 years his health has been a challenge at best but I wouldn't trade him for anything! Koda has been riddled with health conditions, which, thanks to his loving vet, has been determined to be a result of allergies to just about every type of food, growing too quickly and clumsiness. We have been able to move past all this and now he is a happy healthy 4 1/2 year old pupper.

He is really clumsy and as a result managed to blow out his ACL while running around in the back yard. But again with the loving care of his doctor he is all repaired and on the run again! Koda, our gangly tall baby boy loves his family dearly, especially his 10 year old human brother who he loves to share the back seat with on rides!

Koda has managed to melt the hearts of our neighbors and changed many a persons mind about the assumption that Rotts are bad!

Now there is Kas. She has been with us just a little over a year. She has been our first female adult adoption and was a huge decision for our family. With adopting an adult you never know what trouble you may be getting in to as a result of her past experiences, education, etc. Kassy has been a great addition though!

When we first met our Rotty girl she was shy as all get out and did the drop and four legged brace when going in to buildings. She was very shy and did not care if you were present our not she just stood there, back to you and not seeking out attention. It only makes me wonder what awful things happened to her in the past. We never knew much about Kassy's past because she was a reported stray wondering the streets of St. Lawrence County.

Since Kas has grown to trust her forever family and has moved past most of her fears and is become a very pampered pooch with her Rotty brother Koda. She somehow thinks she is a lap dog. Must be no one has ever told her that she weighs about 100 lbs. and is REALLY HEAVY on your lap! But she loves to snuggle and puts her head on your shoulder and melts your heart with her big brown eyes!

They enjoy daily naps on the couch, sometimes hourly! Romps in the freshly fallen snow and runs in the waters of the county's lakes and waters. They eat the best of food, since both are allergic to many food items and if not restricted, end up sick and having skin problems. A small price to have to pay to have healthy happy kids though!

We are so greatful to have added these guys to our family. The Potsdam Humane Society were great in every adoption and worked with us every step of the way with paperwork, know how and tips! Granted there are a lot of things you discover after the pets come to your home, but, isn't that just a fact of life? If you have a child the doctor cannot tell you that child is going to be healthy all of his or her life, they are going to be good in school and productive members of society. Can they?

So despite little idiosincracies (like Kassy absolutely disliking cats or Koda's inability to digest chicken(a main staple of dog food)) we have victoriously achieved not one or even two but three wonderful forever adoptions in our wonderful extended family! Thank you Potsdam Humane Society!!

I also love the Potsdam Shelter! We have adopted 4 cats and one dog from there and they have been and were the best pets ever. I have been so pleased with the shelter that I have recently started to volunteer there. I hope whenever anyone is looking for a new pet they take a look there.
