Pros: The animals and staff
Cons: Facilities need work...
I have recently lost my kitty for 12 years. He was my companion, buddy and sparring partner. I rescued him before he was sent to the shelter when he was but a small kitten.
I am considering finding a new cat to fill the void I have had for the past 6 months. I enjoy listening to the animal shelter reports on the local radio station and hear all the good things the Potsdam Humane Society is doing to give critters good homes.
There is an over population problem in our area and the folks at PHS are doing a wonderful job. I know it is overwhelming at times. I know they need more room for the work they do. They service a large area with a small staff and little resources.
I know they work hard to be good stewards. I think they should be considered for the makeover for a number of reasons.
1. They have a heart to see animals of all varieties have good homes. They will not put down an animal just because they have not found a home yet. With today's economy, they are housing more and more than they probably expected.
2. St. Lawrence County is one of the nation's largest counties, yet it has a small population base. It is all rural. It is also one of the poorest. Geographically, there are many challenges faced by any organization servicing such a wide area. The PHS serves a large number of villages and towns. They are indeed the ONLY shelter servicing many of these areas.
3. They are in the middle of a capital campaign to raise needed monies to upgrade their current facilities. They are in need of major repair to drainage systems and building in general. These expenses can be overwhelming in today's economic times, people just don't have the extra funds. It is hard in an economically depressed area such as ours, but they have done a good job. They need more.
4. For the health of the animals they house. They need room to do their everyday screening, vet services, dog running area, and anything else they need to provide a safe, healthy pleasant environment for their charges while they await adoption. Though it is temporary, it is "home' for these critters and they deserve as nice as they can get.
I hope they are considered for the makeover. If they do not get the grand prize, of which they are deserving, they should get some consolation anyway.

I couldn't agree more with Virginia. Our local shelter has always tried to do the best it could on a shoestring budget. Although they may be short on financial resources they are long on love, patience and dedication to all the pets that come under their care. They are truly deserving of a wonderful makeover!
