Wondering what that zootoo tattoo is doing on our page?! That is a picture of our 93 year old deputy mayor, Ruth Garner, getting a tattoo in support of Potsdam Humane Society and in recognition of the zootoo visit on St. Patty's Day, March 17, 2009! She raised over $500 for our shelter, and raised awareness of our zootoo project and our need for improvements at our shelter. Thank you Mayor Garner!

-----------
Potsdam Humane Society is a small, not for profit shelter located in Northern New York. Since 1957, we have strived to give loving care and shelter to any homeless animal in this area. We currently serve 9 surrounding communities, providing care for all strays, owner surrenders, court cases, and quarantines in a nearly 1,000 square mile area, with a population of about 36,000. Our resources and space are extremely limited for serving such a large area, so we rely on the generosity of people in the community to provide foster homes when we become overcrowded, and volunteer hours to help care for, exercise, and give attention and love to our temporary residents.

We can currently house 18 dogs and about 30-40 cats at a time, though we often have many more than that, and have to double kennels, and keep cats in cages throughout the shelter for periods of time, due to overcrowding.

Many valuable and important programs have been instituted at Potsdam Humane Society, to better serve the needs of our animals and the community that we live in. These include:

A volunteer base of nearly 400 community members, who contribute endless hours to helping with everything from mailings to rehabilitation of animals. Our local college community is a huge help to us, with many students faithfully giving their time to help the animals.

A wonderful foster program, where screened individuals or families take animals into their homes for a period of days to weeks to assist us in raising litters of kittens or puppies, caring for an ailing animal, or giving a break from shelter living to a long term resident.

Leash handling workshops to teach some of our dedicated volunteers how to help dogs in our care become more well mannered on leash, learn basic obedience commands, and therefore have a higher chance of being adopted.

Socializing volunteers who allow screened dogs to play together, or snuggle with the cats and offer them a lap to curl up on for an hour or so.

Educational outreach programs to local school children to teach them about responsible pet ownership, the importance of spaying and neutering, and intentional and educated purchasing of pets.

Participation in many community events, such as our annual village Summerfest, pet fairs, parades, fundraisers, etc. where we bring adoptable animals and information about our shelter and the importance of responsible pet ownership.

We have many more plans for the future, but are unable to make them a reality, due to lack of space and resources. Potsdam Humane Society is deeply devoted to the welfare of the homeless animals of Northern New York, and is determined to continue to improve our shelter and our community for the benefit of all who live here!
