In 1972 or early 1973, newly married, my husband and I were living in Brooklyn NY with one male cat named Leroy. One evening we were going out to dinner or food shop or something-- I honestly don't remember where we were headed-- when outside our nice red brick apartment building, walking on a little cement wall that contained plants and shrubs was the most dirty yet beautiful softly muted red cat that one could ever imagine.
She (and I just knew this beauty was a she) mewed softly approached us and said hello. Sweet, friendly, alone and smudged with coal dust or oil or something, we made a decision right then and there that this lost lady could not remain on a relatively busy Brookly street.
Thus began our short sweet "saga" with Cinnamon and Bideawee.
To make a long story short. We immediately picked her up and brought her upstairs to our apartment to meet Leroy. He surprisingly was OK and non aggressive. She on the other hand immediately took an intensive and aggressive dislike to him. We thought, well OK, they have to get to know each other--didn't happen. That first night Ms. Cinnamon literally chased my Leroy all around the apartment. Not a good situation.
So we took Cinnamon to my sister's home--also in Brooklyn. At that time, the only animal she had was a wonderful little kitten named George--I think. Once through the door Ms. Cinnamon went right after George, but immediately after scaring the hell out of baby George, made instant friends with my then baby nephew Gregory. We didn't know what to make of her. She obviously liked people and little children but HATED other cats.
Two days later we brought her to Bideawee on the East Side in NYC. No way would we allow her to be put down, but where oh where to take her. We had called Bideawee in advance, and while sympathetic to our situation, they told us that they currently were filled beyond capacity.
Charlie, my sister's boyfriend decided we had to take Cinnamon in person to Bideawee. Off we went cat in tow on the subway.
Well they consented to interview us, Charlie was very vocal, very sincere, and very persusive. They noted all the information we could give them about this beautiful little cat, and because she was so very pretty agreed to put her in their showroom. Our agreement was, no prospective home within a week we would come back and get her and "figure something out".
Two days later we received a call from Bideawee, they had matched her with a single older woman living in Manhattan, petless and looking for a quiet feline companion. Ms. Cinnamon had found a home and to this day I am so grateful to this wonderful shelter.
