Additional Information

Somerset Regional Animal Shelter is a small municipal organization that cares for approximately 1,000 lost, abandoned, and surrendered animals each year. We have a hard-working and dedicated staff that goes above and beyond in providing care and love to the animals 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We have an amazing volunteer group who give their heart and soul to support the shelter, the animals and the staff. Together, the volunteers and staff find homes for hundreds of homeless animals each year.

Not only does SRAS provide basic care for the animals but we also go above and beyond to help animals who may not have had a chance at another shelter. There is Clyde the black lab. He was a young black lab hit by a car on a major highway. Due to his injuries, his owner no longer wanted him and the dog was signed over to SRAS. It was very touch and go for the fist 48 hours and our vets weren’t sure he would live as he was in shock and sustained numerous broken bones including a compound fracture to his leg. Clyde was stabilized and after that x-rayed, where it was determined that he needed more extensive vet care that he could get locally. Specialist veterinarians did his surgery, which consisted of resetting bones, placing pins, etc. It took a good six weeks for him to heal. His bills totaled over $3500. Clyde’s story had a happy ending as he was adopted and is in a loving home. Then there is Sir Anthony. He was a throwaway to the woman who literally threw him into the lobby of our shelter. He was skinny, covered in lesions, barely able to open his eyes and was missing nearly all the fur on his body. The shelter saw something special behind the eyes of this sweet boy. He was brought to the best veterinary specialists and endured months of treatments, skin scrapings and herbal baths. The staff moved him into the office to boost his spirits and to keep close watch on his physical and emotional healing. Sir Anthony started off unwanted and uncared for and flourished into a healthy and loving cat living up to his dignified name. He too was adopted into a loving home. These are just two of the many animals that get special care while at Somerset Regional Animal Shelter.

SRAS has implemented a low-cost and humane solution to the stray and feral cat overpopulation problem that affects us all. For only $20 (for our contracted communities) we will humanely trap the stray/feral cat, neuter and vaccinate them, and then either return them to their natural outdoors habitat or adopt them into caring homes. This program is called TNR.

SRAS was selected as one of 7 shelters in the US to be honored by HSUS and Mutts Comics during National Shelter Appreciation Week. We also have many wonderful community events and outreach programs such as our Annual Dog Wash, our yearly Yard Sale, an Aerobathon and humane education to local schools and children’s groups.

Our contracting municipalities are in the process of planning our new animal shelter. While we are very grateful and excited, we feel it needs to be larger and better equipped in order to help our homeless animals have a better quality of life while they are in our care waiting for their forever home. Hopefully, with the help of the Zootoo Shelter Makeover we hope to make this dream a reality.
