Supporting Shelter: ST. HUBERT'S ANIMAL WELFARE CENTER-MADISON

Supporting Rescue: The Raptor Trust

Pros: All staff is caring and skilled, with animals and the public

Cons: Staff works hard and doesn't get enough chocolate for their reward!

St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center strives - and succeeds- in strengthening the bond between people and animals. If an animals comes to St. Hubert's as a stray or surrender, you can be certain it will get the best of care and attention, from the staff that are in charge, to the volunteers that pitch in to make the lives of the shelter animals better with personal attention to each animal.

Few people who surrender animals realize that St. Hubert's provides other services as well. The Paws for People pet therapy program sends certified dogs and cats (and bunnies, and one pig!) to hospitals and nursing homes throughout northern NJ. These teams bring comfort and company to thousands of people in those facilities, often on a weekly basis.

Another important service is the Humane Education Program, with lessons for children in PreK through high school in the humane treatment, and enrichment of understanding, of all animals, but in particular, companion animals.
Children who care about animals tend to transfer that caring attitude towards all living things, including the people in their lives. The Humane Education programs set a humane example and teach children the lessons of kindness and compassion through their relationships with companion animals. Lesson topics include safety with dogs and cats and pet responsibility. All lessons stress kindness, understanding and empathy, and all end with the children meeting one of our certified pet therapy teams.

Often, our humane education lesson is the first encounter students have with the concept of compassion and empathy. They learn that their behavior can have a positive influence on other living things. The benefit for students is it creates a touchstone for future ethical decisions concerning not just animals, but other people and situations.

So: St. Hubert's endeavors to cover lots of ground in animal, and human, services!
