Pros: Experience, Education, Caring, Considerate, a step beyond...
Cons: still looking, but cant find anything yet
Paws are not just for animals.. PAWS are for People too, and you can find them in St. Hubert's PAWS for People program. I am priviledged to be a volunteer in their Pet Therapy program for over 3 years with my Cavalier, Braxton.
We went through all the behavior classes, and then took the certification class for their PAWS program. I cannot express enough how important it is to take any Pet Therapy training class available. Don't let the fact that St.Hubert's is the best sway your choice of where to go. Their teachers are patient, kind knowledgable. My baby had a bit of a problem pulling on his leash, and after a discussion with the trainer, he had recommended a harness that hooks to the lead from in front (chest level). What a light bulb moment! It couldnt loose -- a number of friends had that problem as well, and none of the places they took their pets ever suggested that specific harness.
Braxton took to it like a duck to water. The word 'pull' doesn't exist when he wears it (always for Therapy work). Their training is beyond compare. It is a great feeling to walk into a vet's office with a ton of animals and know he will just acknowledge them and that is it. I never worry about how he will respond around new people, animals or situations -- he has been well trained.
It doesn't stop there.. they are well organized and always thinking of new ways of fundraising. Dinners with and without our 4 legged friends, buying/selling chachkas (yiddish for stuff) appearing at summer fairs... it goes on and on.
Now, how they handle all the balls they have in the air with their PAWS program is amazing. Visits are to hospitals, care centers, nursing homes, libraries, special needs classes, residential facilities -- working with children and adults who are emotionally, physically or mentally challenged, it doesn't matter. We must have over 50 facilites where PAWS 'paws' visit.
The staff is always there to answer question, let us know where additional help is needed or the variety of things we never even see that they do. They ROCK!!
St. Hubert's is such a wonderful multifaceted facility that I cannot talk enough about it.. ok, 25000 characters worth. Others have mentioned about their rescue and shelter side, as well as their training classes, so thank you for giving me the space to brag about their PAWS for People Pet Therapy Program.
