Anybody who visits the shelter sees all of the animals happy and in clean cages. What they don’t see is how much hard work it takes to maintain this image. When I was a little kid I used to always say that the cats and dogs had such a good life in a shelter. Yes, all of the animals at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center are very well taken care of and live a good life during the time they are there, but it takes so much work to keep it that way. There are those animals that came from homes where they were spoiled, there are those who had been poorly treated, and some animals that never even had a home. All of the shelter’s staff and volunteers make sure that no-matter where an animal has come from; it gets a very high dosage of love and care. Whenever somebody adopts an animal they should acknowledge the staff/volunteers for their extremely hard work and thank them because if they were not as fabulous as they are, that newly adopted animal may not have found a home.

I have been a volunteer at St. Hubert’s since I was nine. However, until recently, all of my work was mainly at the Dog Training School and at major events. This past August, I was given the opportunity to help out at the shelter. The day I spent there showed me how phenomenal the staff and volunteers really are. When I arrived that morning, I was full of energy and ready to go. By the time I left only six hours later, almost every muscle and bone ached in my body. I did any job from wiping out cages, to feeding the animals; doing dishes to doing the laundry. You would be surprised how much laundry there is to do. All in all, it was a hard day as well as a fun one, but I still don’t know how everybody over there can work that hard every single day.

Three of my dogs came from St. Hubert’s, and it is really nice to know that during their stay they got the TLC they deserved.
