Pros: Wonderful staff who care about their animals and about the community.
Cons: The facilities are in desperate need of an upgrade.
I have been volunteering at LHS since October. In that time, I have seen many cats and dogs go to wonderful homes. I have also seen the time and care that the shelter staff, the managers and volunteers put into every task.
Several volunteers have made it their mission to train the shelter dogs. Many of the dogs are clicker trained and know basic commands. I have seen wild tornadoes be turned into lap dogs. As a volunteer, I have seen first-hand that the animals here are spoiled beyond belief by the care of the staff and volunteers who come in to go on walks or to just cuddle.
The staff does their best to sterilize the animals' living environments, and I have gotten on all fours on many occasions to scrub kennels and bowls. The facilities at the shelter are literally crumbling, however. A recent wind storm knocked over one of the exterior walls of the complex, leaving the shelter vulnerable. Nearly every piece of equipment used in the upkeep up the shelter needs to be replaced - from sinks to washing machines.
This shelter facility is in desperate need of an upgrade. The community helps as much as it can, but with the volume of animals coming and going, LHS is stretching the limits of what it can do in its current space.
