Supporting Shelter: Liberty Humane Society

Pros: Wonderful Service for Animals

Cons: Need more space

I work at Liberty Humane Society. Each and every day I witness a gigantic commitment to animals. This does not only come from the staff but from an incredible group of volunteers and a wonderful Board of Directors. We have come from so little and struggle to improve every day. Our needs are great working in an urban environment with large numbers of strays and unwanted pets entering the shelter every day. But we manage to offer each animal a safe and clean cage, medical treatment if necessary, and healthy food and water. Our space limitations are felt every day and we hope to have a larger shelter in the near future. The needs are great.

Hi Vivian,

Nice to see a picture of LHS on ZOOTOO. Great write up on the shelter and those involved. Liane and I really love LHS and the people that we have gotten to know at the shelter. It's nice to associate with a great group of caring people that share common ground in animal welfare.

We both feel that LHS does a great job with very limited resources and are proud to be a part of its mission. We hope and strive to contribute and make it an even better shelter for animals in need.

Maybe your write up will attract some quality volunteers from the Jersey City, NJ area. Anyone who enjoys a stroll with a dog would have to be interested in taking a jaunt over to Liberty State Park for the magnificant views of the NYC skyline, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty while hanging with man (and woman's) best friend.

Dog lovers living urban areas, such as Jersey City, where landlords don't alway permits dogs may want to volunteer at their local shelters so they can spend some quality time with some great companions/ Added benefits are improving shelter dogs' quality of life and opportunity for adoption.

Can anyone post a video LHS? this would be great so that we can comment on the video....We are a large city....we need to get this makeover for LHS...unlike the suburbs there is no where for animals to hide here..only in abandoned buildings for under cars. With the city being built up and many landlords not allowing pets its getting very hard for animals to survive here in Jersey City. For once let's get something for our town!

We work very hard to place our adoptable animals in the proper homes. Perhaps we can do something positive to encourage property owners to allow pets. We work with a large population of pit bulls and other large breeds which often are shunned by landlords due to insurance policies on rentals.

I myself have found it very hard to find a landlord willing to allow my pit bull. My current landlord has spent almost every week with my dog while renovating my apartment. The tenants upstairs also have a pit/boxer mix. My roommate also has a pit-mix. It's also a matter of tenants also being smart, introducing their dog in person to their potential landlord. We have a lot of work on our hands with the amount of animals we provide care for, but as a staff member who helps to adopt out animals and provides daily hospitality to them, I always do my absolute best to help out a potential adopter with advice on a landlord situation. We've seen miracles happen and landlords soften their hearts. We can only try to work harder in order to help more animals find loving homes.

Actually your response provides me with the incentive to work that much harder to showcase our great work. Thank you!

It is a shame that some people have to hide behind being anonymous when making unsubstantiated, negative comments.

I am glad, however, that 99% of the folks that use the Zootoo forum put out ideas, questions and comments in a contructive way....one that promotes healthy discussion and exchange. Even if we don't always agree with one another, it is done in a manner that promotes our common interest of doing what is best for animals in need.

Just putting out unsubstantiated, negative remarks against individuals does not belong on this forum. Leave it for the gossip mill.

Hi, my name is Lara Whateley (google me) and I work in the kennel and cattery at Liberty Humane Society. I strive on a daily basis to create a great experience for not only the animals I care for, but also the "community" you speak of. I personally do not appreciate the misinformation and slander that you feel the need to post. From my own experience, my interaction with the general public and the "community" has been nothing but a positive experience. Most people seem to be sympathetic to the idea of euthanasia in appropriate situations, however, we do not euthanize for the sake of "making room." Euthanasia is to be done in the most humane way possible for the appropriate reasons such as temperment or illness.

Do you honestly believe there is such thing as a NO-KILL shelter that takes in and houses every animal that comes through their doors, adoptable or not?

With the writing style coming from these comments, it seems that this anonymous poster does not even live in our area. Anyone from Jersey City would know that Jersey City is a large city with an animal population problem as well as many "communities" of people. Some of these people raise animals for the wrong reasons, and sometimes...these animals end up in our facility.

Sometimes, these animals find a better life because of our hard work.

As for you, Mr./Ms. Anonymous, go look up the drama llama. He's calling for you. As for us,we're too busy doing good work and PLACING ANIMALS IN GOOD HOMES.

Lara, Thank you for your honesty - but especially your hard work. We are a great shelter because of people like you!
