Supporting Shelter: Liberty Humane Society

Supporting Rescue: Kitty Kind

Pros: caring staff, community support, creative planning, friendly

Cons: shelter needs upgrades

Liberty Humane Society is on the corner of a large public park in Jersey City, close enough to public transportation, and just off the Turnpike exit. Every time I have visited the shelter to help take photos (over the summer), there were tons of volunteers around, talking to potential adoptive parents, educating each other on the current conditions of each pet, and accepting the public with a friendly and positive attitude.

I especially love the cat room upstairs because some of the cats that have earned the privilege (and that have friendly personalities) are free to walk around and greet people under the careful supervision of a volunteer. They have some old timers in there that have been around for a long time and they do their best to show the kitties love and support. Having a rescue cat myself, I know this is an important role.

The shelter marks the dog cages with a system that lets you know which dogs are adoptable and which have not been approved for adoption yet. From my observation, they are very organized with cleaning, feeding, and care, enabling volunteers to easily come and walk dogs according to their abilities. Because of the location of this shelter, they tend to get a lot of pits and they provide information to people about proper training for these misjudged pets. I think this is an important role for the shelter to play because of the overabundance of bad pet owners in the larger, very broad Jersey City community (fighting dogs, protection, gang activity). Its a hard battle to fight, and I'm glad LHS is there to fight it.

I have also seen that members of the community come to the office to ask questions and advice, despite this not being a medical clinic. I've seen the staff handle those inquiries with tact and care, giving referrals when possible, and genuinely being a support system to pet owners.
