Supporting Shelter: Liberty Humane Society

Supporting Rescue: Bad Rap

Pros: Caring staff and volunteers. Great with the shelter animals

Cons: Needs better facilities and better availability for adopters

LHS is an outstanding shelter that my wife and I volunteer at. While we live in Edison we shelp to Jersey City because of the Pit Bull population and the great job they are doing for Pits, especially their BADDOG program. They also do a great job for cats and other animals that wind up in their care.

The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and just a great bunch of people. They are a bit overwhelmed but only because they work on a shoestring budget and have limited physical resources. Also, because of the physical arrangment of the converted garage, there isn't really a reception area that you have to pass through when you enter the shelter, so sometimes potential adopters wander into the kennel area and may go unnoticed.

My wife an I have been affiliated with LHS for about two years and constantly see improvement with what they are doing and how they are doing it. They have fairly recently brought on some new staff who are outstanding, i.e. the volunteer coordinator and the development person. They already had outstanding staff in their executive director, shelter manager, and assistant shelter manager. The guys and gals in the trenches do a great job as well.

Some of the recent improvements are the BADDOG program. Check it out through a link at their web site (www.libertyhumane.org) They also run a great annual fund raiser called "Bark in the Park" and this year they did a fund raiser, exposure for adoptable dogs event, at Riverfront Stadium which is located in Newark. The Newark Bears who are an Independent League baseball team had a Take your dog to the ballpark day and allowed LHS to bring their dogs and have tables and displays featuring the shelter. The Newark Bears is another fine organization that supports LHS.

Anyway, LHS is a great shelter and I am proud to be affiliated with it. No matter how bad my day is, if I can get up to the shelter and walk some pups, that brightens it up.

I'd like to write more, but guess what. Playing hookey from work today and what do you think I'll be doing shortly? Heading up to LHS to work with some great shelter dogs. If you live in or visit the area, stop by and take a peak. You'll be glad you did.

LHS does have a great staff and the staff in the "trenches" are amazing. But without a doubt, nothing can compare to the wonderful people who volunteer their talents, love of animals, and time to the shelter. We are always trying to improve - not only because of the pets - but because we believe in what we can become. Thank you!
