Supporting Shelter: Liberty Humane Society
Supporting Rescue: TLC Rescue Inc
Pros: Staff, staff, volunteers, staff
Cons: Facilities need to be better (and they're working on it)
An animal shelter in a converted city garage. What they lack in specialization for the purpose they more than make up for in commitment from staff and help from volunteers. I have volunteered at LHS for 3 plus years and adopted the Dog and Miss Tigger, our 2 cats, from them. In my time with LHS I have seen it get better and better. Facilities have been expanded so they can care for more animals and the staff does incredible work in sometimes difficult and heartbreaking circumstances. How they deal with so many strays and owner surrenders and keep a positive attitude is beyond me. They go out of their way to educate the public and adopters about how to properly care for their pets, how to avoid troubles when bringing a new critter home, and what adopters can do if the new critter isn't settling in as quickly as expected. They also work valiantly to dispel the rumors and outright lies about one of my new favorite breeds, the pit bull. Before my time with LHS I had no opinion about pit bulls. Now that I've interacted with literally hundreds I have a great appreciation for them and a different opinion of the people who train them to fight. If you want a good pet, avoid pet stores, puppy mills, and breeders. Go to LHS and find a new beastie to take care of you.

Nice writeup Andy! I feel the same way, the staff and volunteers are great at LHS. One of the reason, Tony and I come all the way from Edison is because they are Pit Bull friendly unlike some of the shelters in my area. I have learned a lot from coming to LSH and met some great people along the way.
