Our Story:

Located in a converted garage in Jersey City, the Liberty Humane Society strives to provide homeless animals with respect, care and works hard to find them new homes. We have made best of our facility as is, but could use some extra help in making it a state of the art animal shelter! Please vote for LHS in Zootoo.com's Million Dollar Make Over contest!

Services to the Community:
Who’s Your Daddy? (Spay / Neuter Program) - Our spay/neuter program is targeted to reach low-income residents who can’t afford to have their dog or cat neutered. We also work with local rescue groups to spay/neuter feral cats for trap/neuter/release programs. The low-cost spay/neuter program addresses the disproportionate number of unwanted litters in specific neighborhoods.

Pet It Don’t Sweat It - This program provides food and supplies for needy families with pets, thereby keeping more pets out of shelters and in the homes where they are loved.

Low Cost Euthanasia – LHS provides a minimal euthanasia fee to those who may not be able to afford to humanely put to sleep their beloved pet. This service is provided with the utmost privacy, sympathy and understanding by a New Jersey certified euthanasia technician at LHS.

Pet Loss Support Group – This program offers understanding, guidance and comfort to people who are having difficulty coming to terms with the loss of a beloved animal companion. This group is offered free of charge and conducted by a licensed therapist on the second Sunday of each month at 1:30 pm at LHS.

Humane Education – In 2008 LHS formed nine different humane education programs designed to teach children kindness and respect towards companion animals. Studies show that children that are kind to animals will be kind to people throughout their life. There are also programs that will teach children about protecting the environment and becoming a responsible pet owner. In all programs, the pet overpopulation will be discussed as well as the importance of spaying and neutering. These programs are offered free of charge to any school in Hudson County. Programs:
B.A.D. Dogs program - B.A.D. Dogs (Bullies are Deserving Dogs) was started when shelter staff saw great and sound dogs - Pit Bulls sitting in the shelter unadopted simply because they were Pit Bulls. B.A.D. Dogs works to educate the public about Pit Bills and helps socialize and train the adoptable Pit Bulls in our shelter.

FOCAL - Friends of Cats at Liberty -

Seniors for Seniors - In 2008, Liberty Humane Society introduced its "Seniors for Seniors" adoption program to facilitate the placement of senior pets with senior citizens. Individuals who are at least 63 years old and who adopt a cat or dog from LHS that is 6 years old or older, will receive a reduced adoption fee. This reduced fee includes all of LHS' normally included services such as spay/neuter, vaccinations, test for Feline Aids and Leukemia (cats only), cat carrier or dog collar, free pet food and a wealth of information on how to care for their new best friend.

Monthly adoption specials - each month LHS features an adoption special to encourage potential adopters to adopt from a shelter. Each month certain pets are adopted at a reduced adoption fee and adopters are sometimes given incentives such as free food, a complimentary vet visit or toys for their new pet with their newly adopted animal. Volunteers - Volunteers are essential in helping our shelter run smoothly. Our volunteers are amazing and so dedicated to LHS but we could always use more animal lovers! In order to become a volunteer for LHS, interested animal lovers must first fill out our volunteer application (which can be downloaded from our website at www.libertyhumane.org, click on "Volunteer.") and attend a volunteer orientation.
